Fig

Fig (Ficus carica) is a fruit-bearing shrub belonging to the Moraceae family. The fig tree is native to Asia Minor and is widespread in the Mediterranean and subtropical regions. Fig plants are unisexual dioecious (but, in exceptional cases, unisexual monoecious species can also be found). There are 2 types of flowers: male and female. The wasp called Blastophaga psenes parasitizes the ovaries of the female flowers with short styles which are only found on male trees, forming small galls. Flowering takes place from March to August, depending on the variety. According to the type of fruiting, fig varieties can be divided into three groups: Adriatic varieties (this group includes the varieties grown in our country), Smyrna varieties, San Pedro varieties. The fruit of the fig tree is called sycamore and has a large number of seeds inside.  The leaves of the fig are webbed and drooping. Figs have high requirements for environmental factors. Therefore, for proper development, it is recommended that the planting site be made according to the specific requirements. Fig plants are sensitive to low temperatures. It is therefore advisable to protect the plants in the cold season.
