Why do the leaves of the fig tree dry out? How to improve the soil?
Hello!
I bought a potted fig tree a couple of weeks ago. For a few days the leaves have started to dry out. I will attach pictures.
Being a dry and hot period, I watered it every other day, sometimes even daily.
I also added a little soil bought in a bag.
I kept it on the west side of the house, where it’s shade in the morning and full sun in the afternoon.
Seeing that it is not doing well, we decided to plant it in the ground. The problem is that we have a loose soil, a former marshland that retains water in autumn and winter, and in summer it becomes very hard and compacted.
What would you advise us to do to improve the quality of the soil?Attachments:

Hello, most probably the symptoms of leaf yellowing were caused by excessive humidity, but for now, if you have planted it outside, to help it overcome the stress suffered at the time of planting, it is recommended to administer several treatments with a product containing beneficial microorganisms that support the development of the root system, AMN BonaVita, 500 ml. It can be administered by watering, in a dose of 50 ml/10 L water. Then, to improve the quality of the soil, you can apply a product such as Organic Soil Activator, 350 ml, this year and throughout the following season.
For information on fig care and cultivation, you can also read our article: Fig, planting, growing and harvesting .-

Recommended articlesNNNicoleta Natea27 July 2023PAPache Angela28 July 2023I’ve had 2 fig trees for 20 years! They are wonderful…
But for 3 days one has been drying out!
The already ripe fruit is good, fresh…
The black one (grafted) is still doing fine!
What can I do? Why did this happen? In all these years they had no problems!
Thank you !Hello. In order to help you with advice, please attach photos focusing on the damaged parts of the plant and photos with the damaged fig tree as a whole. Additionally, please provide us with some additional information regarding the environmental conditions in your area (temperature, precipitation, atmospheric humidity, wind), what are the main characteristics of the soil, if there have been any changes near the plants (spilled substances, digging, site works, use of herbicides). Tell us if you have applied fertilizers or if you have carried out phytosanitary treatments, if you have, how often. How and with what quantity of water do you irrigate the trees, as well as any other information that may be relevant in this case. Please also check carefully and let us know if you notice any pests or disease-specific symptoms on the stem, branches or leaves (including holes, white fuzz, very fine webs, growths, deposits, leaks, distinct discolorations, mold or other).
PAPache Angela29 July 2023I’ve had them for 20 years! In good condition! There’s no excessive humidity! When it’s drought, I water them!
No stains! Neither on the leaves nor on the stem. I’ve cut off some affected branches! They look great when sectioned! They are damp! Nice! The already ripe fruit is good! Healthy!
The one grafted next to it is fine for now. (But the fruit doesn’t grow, it doesn’t ripen…); so he’s next!Attachments:

Hello. In the attached photos there are no symptoms of disease or pest attack, and based on the information provided, it is not possible to determine the reason for the deterioration (most likely a combination of abiotic factors). For an accurate identification, you may consider a laboratory analysis at a Plant Protection Institute in your area.
Additionally, for the revitalization of the shrubs, you can consider using specific organic fertilizers, such as AMN Nordalge, 500 ml or Organic Soil Activator, 350 ml by watering at the roots, respectively Terra-Sorb Foliar, 250 ml by foliar spraying, according to the recommendations on the label of each product.
It is advisable to monitor the development of the fig tree over a period of time, i.e. to ensure the optimal environmental and care conditions detailed in our article mentioned in a previous answer.-

D(Doru (Expert)30 July 2023Hello, it looks to me like bulbs of other plants and theoretically shouldn’t have anything to do with the development of the fig tree.
CrCristian31 July 2023Hello,
I bought a potted fig tree this year. This year it didn’t bear fruit, but I expect next year it will. The problem is with the leaves drying out and I would like to know if it is a disease. I moved it out of the sun because all the leaves had fallen off, and in the new place I thought it would do better because it grew big leaves in a short time.
It’s quite windy, maybe that’s the problem? While it was very hot I watered it daily because the soil dries out quickly, but now I water it less often.
Thanks for the replyAttachments:

Hello! If you did not notice any pests, most probably the leaf deterioration was caused by factors such as: the quality of the substrate, inadequate watering, strong solar radiation, changing environmental conditions (moving the plant), pot size, etc.
A substrate of inferior quality may be too light, too dense or contain too much sand or peat, all of which can lead to plant deterioration. A high quality substrate is balanced and contains a variety of moisture retaining elements. If the substrate does not retain moisture correctly, wilting symptoms occur. It is important that the pots have holes for water drainage and that watering is done moderately, with sufficient amounts of water, but allowing the substrate to dry out before watering again. It is advisable to ensure that sufficient water is applied (the substrate should be saturated) at longer intervals (rather than smaller volumes, administered often). In winter, the frequency of watering has to be considerably reduced as the plant enters a dormancy period.
For the time being, it is recommended to remove the affected leaves and place the fig tree in optimal environmental conditions, detailed in our article: Fig, planting, growing and harvesting .
If you consider that the size of the pot is inadequate (the roots have occupied the entire volume of the pot), or the substrate is unsuitable, you can consider transplanting the tree during the dormancy period, in a pot suitable for its size, using a suitable substrate such as Universal Substrate Radicom, 20 litres.
Additionally, you can choose to use a natural fertilizer that helps to improve the quality of the substrate, supports growth and increases the plant’s resistance to stress factors, such as AMN Verde, 500 ml or AMN Nordalge, 500 ml, applied through watering according to the instructions in the product description.
From spring onwards, AMN Powerfertiliser, 500 ml, can be administered – this is an organic fertilizer rich in micronutrients, specially designed to vitalize and supply plants with nutrients at the beginning of the growing season.-
