Currant

Currant (Ribes sp.) is a fruit-bearing shrub belonging to the Saxifragaceae family. It is a shrub that grows as a bush, 1-2 m tall. The leaves are large, trilobed, or pentalobate, with a serrated edge and pubescent. The flowers are clustered in raceme-like inflorescences, flowering in April-May. Fruits are berry-like, spherical, grouped in clusters. They are black in color and have a sour taste, ripening from July. Currant plants thrive in fertile soil with good water drainage capacity. It tolerates low temperatures but is sensitive to very high summer temperatures.
