Red and white currant – stems dry out
The phenomenon has been going on for about 2 years and I have already lost 2 bushes. In short, the branch is fine in the spring, then in the middle of summer it dries completely, the marrow is completely black, see the pictures. At one point I discovered branches that were semi-dry, part of it had a healthy marrow, the other dry. I also noticed that the leaves start to develop blisters not long after they are fully developed leaves (for example now I have a bush that has such leaves) and I suspect a connection between the leaves with blisters and the final drying of the whole branch. Any idea what it would be and how it is treated? Thanks.

Hello. Those deformations appear as a result of the attack of the red currant aphid (Cryptomyzus ribis). The signs of the attack are also presented in the following article: (Currant treatments, pest and disease control). To control this pest, it is recommended to apply treatments with insecticides specific to control aphids, such as Fizimite, 1 litre. At the same time, in the future, in order to detect the presence of pests (flies, aphids, etc. ) and to be able to apply a treatment, from the beginning of the attack, it is recommended to use an adhesive trap such as Interior & Garden Insect Trap. Pests are attracted to the color of the paper and stick to the special adhesive. Regarding the stems, please tell us if you have noticed the presence of any pest on the plant or an orifice (check carefully).

Thanks for the reply. Related to those blisters on the leaves I have already seen the answer to a similar question asked today. Any explanation for the drying branches? And what can be done against it?

As mentioned above, please check carefully and let us know if you notice any pests on the plants or holes.

I did not see any pests on the leaves. Is there a connection between leaves with blisters and dry branches?
-
The symptoms are similar to the attack of the currant stem borer (Synanthedon tipuliformis). Its larvae dig galleries in the stems of plants, where they consume their marrow. In our catalog, we do not have an insecticide that can be applied in this case. However, in order to reduce the biological reserve, it is advisable to remove and burn the affected stems, and against hibernating forms, it is recommended to carry out treatments during the vegetative rest period (after the fall of the leaves) – (Winter treatments with oils and copper-based products).

So there is nothing to do against this borer?? In addition, there is a long way to go until autumn, what can I do until then?
-
As stated above, the main measure against this pest is to prune the affected stems and destroy them by burning them.

This is not good news because I have nothing to do but wait to see how it gnaws the branches until autumn. Over the weekend I cut the dry stems into small pieces and I managed to find borer larvae in them. Similarly, I found blond aphids on the bottom of the leaves, so both of your assessments were perfectly correct, so thanks, 5 stars for that! One thing I noticed cutting the stems, the attack always starts from the top to the base of the stem. Under the given conditions, my goal now is to reach autumn with as many healthy stems as possible, then apply the indicated treatment. I will add pictures in the next message.

In this case, you can try to remove the affected stems to the healthy portion, then apply a Healing Spray Spruhfix, 100 ml to seal the wounds.

MaMark15 December 2021Hello, the currant leaves fell off a week or so ago so it looks like now is the time to apply the treatment against the borer and in the spring I was recommended a copper and horticultural oil treatment. The question now is -> which product exactly to order?
If in the meantime another treatment has appeared can you recommend me that treatment, if it is effective etc.
ThanksHello, during this period, when temperatures allow (positive temperatures, minimum 5-6°C, on a day without precipitation), it is advisable to perform the treatments corresponding to the dormant period (Winter treatments with oils and copper-based products). Specifically, the first treatment should be carried out with a copper-based fungicide (Bouillie Bordelaise WDG, 50 g or Champ 77 WG, 20 g), and after 10-14 days from the application of the copper treatment, the horticultural oil treatment should be carried out: Ovipron Top, 100 ml, Estiuoil, 100 ml or Mospilan Oil 20 SG 10, 3 g + 50 ml. At the moment, there are no other treatments known against the borer.

MaMark15 December 2021All right, thanks.
If I take 1x of each product, how many bushes will the quantities be enough for?It is not possible to specify an exact number of bushes, as this is influenced by many factors (including the equipment used), but the recommended products should be dissolved according to the recommendations on the label (also mentioned in their description) and applied as evenly as possible over the entire plant.
