White pine blister rust on currant leaves
I got white pine blister rust on my black currant leafs.
Is the any natural way to treat that?What would you recommend?Thank you very much! -
Hello. This type of rust needs 2 host plants to complete its life cycle (Ribes spp. and Eastern White Pine). To control this disease, removing one of the two host plants is usually recommended to prevent the fungus from completing its cycle. However, as the spores of the fungus can travel relatively long distances (spores can be dispersed from conifers not in your yard but in the vicinity), this measure may not effectively control the occurrence of this disease in the currant.
Thus, if there are Pine species in the vicinity of the black currant, it is advisable to carefully check the branches and remove those showing symptoms of this disease, then remove and destroy by burning the affected parts of the black currant. Also, to maintain the plants’ general health, it is recommended to ensure adequate humidity and balanced fertilization. In this case, you may consider using a granular, nutrient-balanced fertilizer that helps build humus and promotes the activity of beneficial soil microorganisms such as Manna Biorit Gartendunger NPK Organic Fertilizer, 5 kg.
In the future, you can consider using varieties resistant to this disease and avoid planting susceptible species in the same area.-
