Hazel

Hazel (Corylus avellana) is a fruit-bearing shrub belonging to the Betulaceae family. It grows spontaneously in various regions, such as Southern and Central Europe, Asia Minor, and Cyprus. The hazel is a unisexual monoecious plant, i.e. it has both male and female flowers on the same specimen. It is one of the early flowering fruit plants. Flowering takes place in January-March, depending on the variety and climatic conditions. The fruits are called achenes. Fruit ripening starts in the second half of August. The edible part is the stone.  Hazel plants are not very picky about soil composition, but they do not thrive on sandy or acidic soils.
