Hazel

Hazel – catkins turn brown

Why do the young catkins start to turn brown and eventually die/ fail to mature in mid to late winter on my corkscrew hazel? There is no obvious presence of a pest and no products have been applied to the soil which is well drained, light and sandy with a neutral ph. The tree is growing in the south of England where the climate is temperate/sub tropical with probably only about 10 days in the winter when the temperature goes below freezing. Soil can get very dry in the summer but the tree does not appear distressed when in leaf in summer.

Later, during the vegetation period, in order to maintain the healthy growth of the hazelnut, you can administer a special fertilizer for trees and shrubs: Tree Shrubs, 1 litre It is applied regularly, at intervals of 6-8 weeks, during the vegetation period and can be administered to all species of ornamental trees and shrubs.
