Spathiphyllum, excessive watering and leaves starting to dry out from the tips

      Hello,
I have a Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum) that I over-watered and realized too late. I tried to save it after almost half of the plant had dried out (at the time I didn’t know why it was drying out…the soil being damp). I cut off the dry leaves and replanted the only root I could save.

At the moment the soil is almost dry, I water it very rarely (once a week) with about 100 ml of water. It hasn’t shown any signs of distress until now, when I noticed the tips of the leaves are turning black and yellow.
When I tried saving the plant again, I transplanted it into a substrate for houseplants.
The plant sits in an office, right on the desk, 5 feet from the window. It has light as long as the season lasts – 8h/day. There are usually 21-20 degrees, and during the winter there can be 17 degrees.

What could I do to save it?

      Thanks in advance.

Hello. In order to avoid the overwatering or insufficient watering of the plant, it is recommended that watering is done after the first 3-5 cm of the substrate have dried. Also, to avoid overwatering, you can water the plant by submerging the pot in another container with liquid for 10-15 minutes, so that the plant will absorb the necessary amount of water. To prevent the spread of any plant pathogens that can be found on the dried leaves and petioles, it is recommended to remove the dry parts of the plant. It is essential that the pot has drainage holes and that the water does not stagnate at the base of the pot or in the pot/tray. Excessive watering can lead to the rotting of the roots and the base of the plant, leaf fall and it can create an imbalance in the plant. In view of the above, you may consider a treatment with a biological fungicide such as Dynamic, 100 g. This is applied by watering the roots in a dose of 10 g/ 10 L water. It is important to prepare a volume of solution corresponding to a single treatment (respecting the mentioned dosage), because the already prepared mixture does not have a shelf life longer than 24 hours.
Generally, to help the plant overcome this period of stress, but also for its harmonious development, it is advisable to apply a product such as Organic Spray for Indoor Plants Zimmerpflanzen, 500ml. More information on the care of the species can be found in our article in the Armuro Community: Spathiphyllum, plant care and growing guide. Given the current condition of the plant, its future development cannot be predicted.

      Hello,
Thank you very much for your advice. In case the substrate is damp, should I wait until 3-5 cm of it dries and then start the treatment with the fungicide and the organic spray? Do you have any tips on how I can dry the substrate faster?

      Thank you.

The spray can be applied at any time, but the Dynamic, 100 g treatment should only be applied after the substrate is mostly dry. To help the substrate dry more quickly, you may consider removing the pot from the braided basket, so the air will circulate better, speeding up the evaporation of water.
