Plumeria – does not bloom
I have three plumeria plants, all last summer they made a lot of leaves but no flowers. I applied fertilizer. I understand they need about 8 hours of sun a day but I only get 4 hours. I was thinking of using light bulbs. I have read about this and should give them a special light spectrum. Does anyone know what kind of bulbs and where I can get them? Or any help I could get. Thanks.

In order to bloom, Plumeria needs optimal light conditions, temperature (winter resting period with lower temperatures), proper fertilization. Thus, in order to form flower buds and bloom during the growing season, it is recommended to regularly apply a fertilizer specially formulated for flowering plants Flowering Organic Fertilizer, 350 ml. In terms of light, you should know that photosynthesis (the process by which the plant provides itself with the necessary nutrients) normally takes place strictly in the presence of sunlight, composed of different types of radiation, with different spectra. It is known that artificial light sources provide the plant with only half of the light energy coming from the sun naturally. In the specialized literature are specified only certain species/varieties of plants that can grow optimally in artificial light conditions. At the same time, it is recommended to respect the specific environmental and care requirements detailed in our article: Plumeria, plant care and growing guide.

Recommended articlesMaManuela6 April 2022Hello, I followed all the steps you wrote here because I informed myself very well, it also had a dormant period, I brought it into the house because it started to make leaves again but it does not bloom. It’s placed near the window but now there’s no strong light. In case of that fertilizer you recommended, in its specifications ,,NPK 3,4 + 3,3 + 3,7 + 0,02 (Cu) + 0,03 (Fe)”. All the horticulturists I contacted from abroad said that the best combination would be 25-25-25 (which I also used), your fertilizer is too weak for plumeria. So with all my special care, it didn’t bloom, the only thing I couldn’t give it was 8 hours of light, just daylight which I don’t think was enough. So I can’t replace natural light with the LEDs used by horticulturists in greenhouses?
In this case, if you have used a fertilizer with an NPK 25-25-25 ratio, you should know that, in general, fertilizers with a high content of nitrogen and phosphorus stimulate the vegetative growth of the plant, to the detriment of flower bud formation and flowering. In addition, the period of administration, the frequency of applications, the concentration used, as well as the method of application, and the content of the fertilizer are very important.
If you want, you can try to supplement the sunlight with led lamps, but you must keep in mind that this lighting system has optimal efficiency in spaces specially designed for growing plants at a professional level and does not guarantee the same results in a home.
