Hello. In order to help you with recommendations and advice, please give us more details about the growth and care of the plant: if it has been transplanted after purchase, if the pot has drainage holes, what are the current environmental conditions (light, temperature, humidity), what type of substrate it has, if the substrate dries out before watering, if there are heat sources or cold draughts in the vicinity of the plant, if you have carried out treatments or if you have fertilized it. Also, please check the plant carefully and let us know if you notice any other symptoms (deposits, powders, discoloration, white fuzz, fine webs on the topside and underside of the leaves, etc.) or pests. If you notice any symptoms of disease/pests, please attach clear and relevant photos of them.
AlAlina18 March 2024Hello. Yes, it was transplanted immediately after purchase into a pot of the same size and I actually lifted the plant with the substrate it was in and put it in another pot. The pot has drainage holes with a built-in tray. I keep it in a medium lit room, not next to the window, the temperature is 20-22*C, no draughts, no direct light. I don’t know anything about the soil, it’s the one from the shop (it’s a very light substrate). I water it once a week, with tap water, but I leave it for a few hours in a bowl to get to room temperature. After 2 weeks I have noticed that the leaves from the base up are turning brown, thin and somewhat rotten and die. I have never had this happen to other plants and don’t know what could be wrong. I have not fertilized it at all. I haven’t seen any pests. I bought 3 ficus in total and the other 2 are fine, but this one is dying quickly. I have noticed that the stem is also turning a little brown and seems to be rotting just like the leaves. Although in the picture it doesn’t look so bad, in reality the leaf is rotten and thin, good for throwing away.

It is known that variegated species are more sensitive to changing environmental factors (draughts, humidity, light intensity). According to the information provided and the attached pictures, the deterioration of the plant may have occurred due to a combination of factors: changing environmental and care conditions (Acclimatisation of indoor plants and Indoor plant placement according to environmental factors), transplanting shortly after purchase (Indoor plants - Repotting), a possible constant high humidity at the root level, etc. For the time being, it is recommended to remove the severely damaged leaves, keep the plant in optimal conditions and take proper care of it, as described in our article in the Armuro Community: Ficus, plant care and growing guide. It is also recommended to water the plant after the first 3-5 cm of substrate have dried. To help the development of the roots and to increase the plant’s resistance to stress factors, you can consider applying, by watering, a natural fertilizer, such as AMN BonaVita, 500 ml. This can be applied regularly to the plant, according to the information provided by the manufacturer.
