Ficus bejamina, excessive leaf drop, including the young ones
I purchased the plant 2 months ago. I was told that it was normal for the leaves to fall off in the first week, but the process continued. Initially I wasn’t worried because it looked like it was growing young leaves, but in the last 2 weeks I have noticed that even those are getting soft and drying out.

Hello! Although it is normal for the plant to lose some leaves in the first week after moving due to stress, the continued loss of leaves, including the young ones, may indicate a care problem or a disease. In order to help you with a recommendation, please give us more information about the care of the plant (watering, humidity, temperature), whether or not any treatments have been carried out, if you have applied any fertilizers and any other details that may be relevant. Also, please tell us if you can see any deposits on the leaves, thin webs or pests.
DrDragos8 March 2024I kept the plant in the original pot, it was vigorous and had a rich crown. I placed it about 1m from the window, away from heat sources, the temperature is 23-24 degrees, the humidity around 40%. I water it once a week. I started applying Ficus Freund Fertilizer and Leaf Shine Spray a few days ago, but I estimate that the plant still has less than 15% of its original leaves. The leaves and stem have no deposits or pests. At the soil level I noticed a few flies.
The presence of gnats (Fungus gnats) in the substrate is an indicator of high humidity in the substrate. These gnats mainly infest the substrate in pots, containers etc., feeding primarily on decaying organic matter. As the development of these flies is determined by the high, persistent moisture in the substrate, it is recommended to pay attention to the frequency of watering (allowing the substrate to dry slightly before watering again, while respecting the moisture requirements of the plant) – Ficus, plant care and growing guide. Also, after watering, it is recommended to remove the remaining liquid from the exterior pot.
If the degree of infestation is high, you can opt to replace the first few centimeters of the substrate (the flies are usually found there) with a new, fresh one such as Green Plants Professional Substrate, 10 litres. For monitoring and catching the flies, it is recommended to use an adhesive trap such as Butterfly Guard, set of 10. The pests are attracted by the color of the trap and stick to the special adhesive.
Next, it is recommended to regularly apply the Fertilizer Ficus Freund, 350 ml to help the plant overcome the abiotic stress and for the development of new leaves.-
