Citrus plant, pest identification, treatment information
Hello! I have a lemon tree that is about 50 years old. Last autumn I transplanted it and moved it from my parents’ house, where in winter it had a temperature of 15 degrees, to my house where the temperature is max. 21 degrees. For 2-3 months small webs have appeared among the branches and now I noticed some small sticky droplets on the leaves – from what I read I think they are lice. The lemon tree bloomed profusely during the winter, some of the flowers but also some of the fruit fell off. I think this is normal, but the leaves are not falling off. I have ordered a treatment from you which can be seen in one of the attached pictures. Please let me know if this is the correct treatment and the steps I should follow. I would not want to lose it as it has been in our family for a long time. Thank you!

Hello! As the attached photos are not clear enough to accurately identify the pest(s) (if any), please attach more clear, close-up photos with the formations on the leaves as well as with the webs you have observed.
ElElena21 February 2024I have attached the pictures, but I should mention that it has not been affected for a long time. Only 10% of its surface is affected. I hope these pictures are clearer. Thank you!

The lemon tree is affected by scale insects (Scale insects in ornamental plants - pest management). Against them, you can carry out 2 treatments, at 5-7 days intervals, alternating the 2 insecticides Movento 100 SC, 7.5 ml and Mospilan 20 SG, 3 g.
More precisely, the first treatment can be carried out with Movento 100 SC, 7.5 ml, and the second treatment can be carried out with Mospilan 20 SG, 3 g, 5-7 days after the first treatment. To increase the effectiveness of the insecticides, it is advisable to add Break Thru S 240, 2 ml, in a dose of 2 ml/10 L to the solutions.
Spray the solutions as finely as possible, so as to achieve an even distribution on the plant, both on the topside and on the underside of the leaves, as well as on the stem.
After they die, these pests remain on the stem and leaves, so it is advisable to remove them with a damp sponge.
You can also apply the Citrus Fluid, 350 ml, in a dose of 10 ml/1 L water. This can be applied once a week during the growing season to stimulate the regeneration and healthy growth of the lemon tree.-

MiMihaela23 February 2024Hello. What could I treat this lemon tree with? I should mention that it also has something sticky on the leaves. It’s in a pot and during the winter it is kept inside the house. What treatments and fertilizers can I apply? Thank you for your possible answers

Hello. In order to be able to help you with recommendations, please attach a few clear photos of the observed symptoms of deterioration and describe them in as much detail as possible (if you also notice the presence of pests, growths, deposits, discolorations, very fine webs or other). Additionally, please mention how long you have owned the plant, when the symptoms of deterioration started, what are the environmental conditions in the area (light, temperature, draughts, atmospheric humidity), if you have transplanted it, how much water you use and at what intervals you water, whether the substrate is mostly dry before watering or not, whether the pot has water drainage holes, whether you have applied fertilizers, and any other information that may be relevant in this case.
MiMihaela25 February 2024Good morning. Thank you very much for your reply. The lemon tree is not mine it is my sister-in-law’s. She lives in the countryside. In summer she keeps it outside, away from the strong sun, and in winter inside the house, in a hallway where the temperature is not very high. I think it was planted in a pot two years ago. It has some brown sticky spots. She hasn’t seen webs or pests. I would like to help her, so she knows what to do to it. Could you recommend what soil and fertilizers to get her, and if they are good for orange trees as well? As far as I know she has sprayed it with mospilan before. Thank you very much.

The nature of the condition cannot be accurately determined from the attached photographs or the information provided, but most likely the deterioration can be related to a combination of biotic and abiotic factors.
For the time being, as no pests have been identified and in view of the treatments with Mospilan 20 SG, 3 g, it is recommended to remove all the leaves showing symptoms of deterioration. Afterwards, 1-2 treatments (by spraying) with a fungicide such as Champ 77 WG, 20 g, in a dose of 20 g/10 L of water, can be considered at 7-10 days intervals (if 2 treatments are carried out). Spray the solution as evenly as possible on the plant, on the topside and underside of the leaves (Tech1). It is important to prepare a volume of solution corresponding to a single treatment (respecting the mentioned dosage), because the already prepared mixture does not have a shelf life longer than 24 hours.
At the same time with the treatments, it is also recommended to use a fertilizer that stimulates the regeneration of plants and increases their resistance to stress factors, such as Vital NT, 250 ml, by watering at the roots, according to the instructions on the label. Additionally, 7-10 days after the completion of the fungicide treatments, it is recommended to apply a fertilizer that activates and revitalizes the metabolism of the plants, such as Neem Oil Spray Fertilizer, 250 ml, by foliar spraying. This fertilizer can then be applied regularly.
Subsequently, starting in spring (throughout the growing season), it is recommended to regularly apply a special fertilizer, such as Citrus Fluid, 350 ml, by watering at the roots, as recommended on the label.
It is further recommended to ensure optimal growing conditions for this species (Citrus, plant care and growing guide). It is essential that the pot has water drainage holes and that water does not stagnate at the base of the pot or in the exterior pot/tray. Excessive watering can lead to the rotting of the roots and of the base of the plant, to leaf drop and to the creation of an imbalance in the plant. When watering, consider using rainwater (if possible). If tap water is used, it is recommended to keep it in an open container for at least 24 hours before use.
As transplanting would cause additional stress to the lemon tree, it is recommended to carry out this operation only in spring, respecting the general conditions related to this operation. The use of a special substrate can be considered, such as: Citrus Professional Substrate, 20 litres.
More information on this subject can be found in our articles: Citrus, pest and disease control, respectively Indoor plant placement according to environmental factors and Dormancy period of indoor plants. The future development of the lemon tree cannot be accurately predicted.
The above recommended fertilizers are also suitable for oranges.-
