Ficus, pest and disease control

ficus treatments

Ficus as a houseplant does not have the same environmental conditions as in its area of origin, so it can be easily susceptible to diseases and pests attacks. The plants must be cared for according to their specific requirements, monitored to detect in time the problems that may occur, and if you notice the presence of pests/diseases, it is recommended that the plant in question be isolated, so as not to affect others.

Pests. The most common pests that can infest Ficus plants are mites, European fruit lecanium, and wooly apple aphids.

  • Treatments against mites are carried out with insecticides.

Abiotic diseases:

Drying, blackening and the falling of the leaves can occur due to excessive moisture in the substrate, low temperatures, and insufficient light during the winter. It is recommended to place the Ficus in a bright room, at an optimal temperature of 18-20º C, and water should be added only when the substrate is dry on the surface. You should reduce the frequency of watering in winter.

Excessive fertilizing can cause the appearance of swelling and brown stripes on the stem, so moderate fertilization with a specific fertilizer is recommended, according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Tips for proper care of the Ficus plants:
  • it is recommended that watering be done moderately, with water at room temperature.
  • it is important to wipe the leaves regularly with a damp cloth.
  • the Ficus prefers a bright place, protected from direct sunlight.
