Pelargonium

Geranium is part of the genus Pelargonium, a genus comprising about 200 species of perennials, most of which are native to southern Africa. The name of the genus comes from the Latin 'pelargos', which translates as 'stork', the fruit is similar to a stork's beak. Geranium (Pelargonium domesticum) is an extremely common species, being found mainly as a potted plant, decorative with its colourful flowers and appreciated for its long flowering period.
