Walnut tree – the branches have started to die up
I have a beautiful black walnut tree in salt lake city that is about 60 years old. Individual branches have started to die up high and some of the larger branches
of the main sections are dying. Is there anything I can do to save this tree? The tree is in our backyard. We get the Sun from the West in evenings. I live in Sandy Utah which is close to Salt lake City, Utah. We had a fairly dryer winter than usual. Last year there was no problem with the tree it was fine. We had ivy growing a few feet up the trunk, and when my husband noticed the black underneath it he cut it all off. We assumed it was from the moisture trapped under the ivy. The black has not washed off. You can see there are a few leaves that have kind of a brown spots and are a little shriveled. We have not seen any insects. We do have an occasional woodpecker but not often. The tree was small when we moved in but was still probably a few years old. I would estimate the tree to be around 30 years old. We have not treated it at all yet, because we were not sure what was wrong. There are ivy Vines growing around it and day lilies are planted around it. They have been there for several years. We just noticed recently that the top had no leaves. So this is the first year we seem to have had a problem with it. Although the black stuff on it was there last year. I do appreciate your help and taking the time to look at this and respond. Thank you so much. -

Hello, the walnut seems to have a condition caused by a bacterial complex, and no treatment is known against it. The walnut may not be completely affected, but it will most likely not have an aesthetic appearance anymore.
