Walnut tree, dry branches
Hello,
I noticed some kind of yellow fungus on the walnut trees in the garden as it can be seen in the picture. Since it appeared several walnut branches, regardless of age, started to dry out.
Is it a pest? If so, why does it occur and how can it be removed or treated?
Thank you!Attachments:

Hello. The fungus that appeared on your walnut is a lichen and does not affect the walnut. Regarding the drying of the branches, it would be a possibility that they are attacked by the fruit-tree pinhole borer. You can identify its attack by searching carefully the bark of the tree for its exfoliation. If you find it, remove the bark and you should see tunnels and small white grubs along most of the branch. To control the larvae you should remove the bark all along the larvae’s path and apply a horticultural oil, an insecticide and a copper-based fungicide (Mospilan Oil 20 SG 10, 3 g + 50 ml, Movento 100 SC, 7.5 ml and Bouillie Bordelaise WDG, 50 g).
The horticultural oil and insecticide are applied together and the bordeaux mixture is applied separately.
I hope this helps.-

Hello. More detailed information and advice in this situation can be found in a similar topic in the Armuro Community: https://www.armuro.com/en/forums/about/cherry-and-sour-cherry-with-lichens-on-branches/. Additionally, to prevent and control the spread of plant pathogens, it is essential to carry out winter treatments on fruit trees, the complete program including copper treatments (against fungal diseases) and horticultural oil treatments (against pests). More detailed information can be found in our article: Winter treatments with oils and copper-based products.
As for the drying of some branches, it is recommended to check carefully the health of the trees. In case you identify unusual symptoms (the presence of pests in different stages of development, holes, tunnels, deposits, discolorations, leaks, outgrowths, exfoliations or others – Walnut tree treatments, pest and disease control), please return with clear photos (both of the trees as a whole and focusing on the observed symptoms). Also, in this instance please come back with further information about the existing environmental conditions and the care conditions offered.
