Hello! I have noticed that 5 thuja have yellowed and finally dried out completely. On the trunk of the plant I noticed some holes. Now I have to complete the row of thuja as the dried ones I removed. What do you recommend when planting them so that no disease is transmitted to the others?
Hello. From the image attached, the thuja seems to be attacked by a species of conifer borer, most likely – Cypress Jewel Beetle (Ovalisia festiva) - pest management. In the future, you can apply treatments against the adults with broad-spectrum insecticides such as Faster 10 CE, 2 ml (in a dose of 2 ml/ 7 L water) or Karate Zeon 50 CS, 2 ml (in a dose of 1.5 ml/ 10 L water), by spraying. Insecticides are usually applied during the adult flight and mating period (May-August). Therefore, you can consider applying several treatments, alternating the two substances at intervals of 5-7 days, and spraying the solution as close as possible to the trunk and branches. To increase the effectiveness of the insecticides, it is recommended to add an adjuvant such as Break Thru S 240, 2 ml, in a dose of 2 ml/10 liters of solution. In addition, it is important to mention that against larvae (if they enter the wood), there are no known control treatments.
Regarding the planting of other conifers, after this operation (Ornamental trees and shrubs - Planting guide), it is recommended to apply by watering a fertilizer that supports the development of the roots and facilitates the overcoming of the stress period such as Enraizal, 1 litre, according to the recommendations on the product label. The fertilizer is dissolved in water at the dosage recommended by the manufacturer and administered in an amount of water equal to that normally used for watering.
Also, from spring, it is indicated to regularly apply a fertilizer with natural algae extracts, such as Algaton, 1 litre or AMN Nordalge, 500 ml during the entire growing season (March-September), by watering, according to the instructions on the labels.
