Cherry tree – holes at the base of the trunk
Good morning. I noticed the holes at the base of the cherry tree trunk, from which comes a kind of sawdust. Who attacks the cherry and how can I treat it? Does he still have a chance of survival? Thanks in advance for the answer.

Hello, it seems to be the larva of a moth (Cossus cossus or Zeuzera pyrina) that digs upward galleries in trunks or branches, the affected fruit trees drying out over time. It is recommended that, with the help of a flexible steel wire that you insert in the gallery (make a small loop at the top) to try to take it out (be careful, the galleries can reach 0. 5 m in length). After removing it, disinfect with a solution based on copper Bouillie Bordelaise WDG, 50 g but more concentrated (in this case, 10 – 20 g of Bordeaux mixture in a liter of water). After disinfecting well with the solution, close the wound with a special healing solution such as tree plaster ( Tree plaster, 300 g ) or with mastic ( Bio Plantella Arbosan, 350 g ). It is important to seal the entrance hole, otherwise, the gallery dug by the larva will become a shelter during the winter for other pests, which will be protected not only from the cold but also from the treatments during the rest period. It is also important that during the vegetative rest period to apply the specific treatments, with copper-based fungicides (Winter treatments with oils and copper-based products). To avoid the apparition of certain diseases/pests, depending on each phenophase, it is recommended to apply preventive treatments as well.

Congratulations on this article. Very useful! I have a 3-year-old quince where I saw the other day on one of the branches a small hole from which sawdust came out, but I didn’t know how harmful it was. I saw 2-3 ants coming in and out, but I expected that the ant could not do such a thing. It was only after seeing this post that I was able to see for myself and luckily I managed to get the larva out. Thank you very much!
