Thuja, planted a year ago, drying from inside
Hello! Last year, in autumn I planted 20 thujas, about 80cm in size. In that hole I put potting soil, and up to and including in September I applied a liquid fertilizer for conifers once every 14 days. They also had some white mould on the stem, we treated them 3 times with an insecticide bought from the phytosanitary shop. However, for about a month they have been drying out on the inside and at the base. There are also some blackened leaves. The soil is a little sandy and the place is a bit shaded. I also have a bichon puppy that roams freely in the yard. 3 thuja shrubs have completely dried out. What can I administer to save the rest? Is there any fertilizer or solution that can be administered from November? Thank you!

Hello. A slight wilting inside the crown, or at the base of the crown, is a normal phenomenon in conifers, which occurs with the growth and thickening of the canopy and, therefore, the limitation of light penetration. In this case, it is possible that the phenomenon was accentuated by abiotic factors, such as the stress suffered during planting, unfavorable climatic conditions, poor soil quality, inadequate watering and others, depending on the case (Environmental factors influencing tree health and growth). It is known that the chance of success when planting seedlings is lower in large specimens (due to the difference between root and crown size). The stress suffered at planting can have effects over a longer period of time, depending on the plant’s ability to regenerate, and the environmental and care conditions provided.
If you have not identified the presence of pests or any other symptoms, it is recommended to remove the dry parts of the plants with well sharpened and disinfected tools (Power Pruner). During this period (as soon as possible) you can consider using a fertilizer with a high potassium content, such as Fertilizer 0-0-40 Azet HerbstKali, 2 kg (by spreading it around the plants, in a dose of 20 – 30 g/m², followed by incorporation and watering). It has the effect of increasing the resistance to frost and improving the water balance of trees and shrubs.
It is recommended to loosen the soil around the conifers and to keep a portion of land permanently tilled and clear of various materials. As the activity and spread of plant pathogens is stimulated by the high and constant humidity of the soil, watering is recommended to be carried out according to the recorded temperatures and rainfall only when the soil is dry on the surface. Spraying the trees with water, watering them with sprinklers or watering them together with the lawn is contraindicated, because the humidity at the foliage level and the constant humidity at the base of the trees represent a favorable environment for the development and propagation of fungal diseases.
Further it is recommended to monitor the evolution of the conifers, and if you identify symptoms that may be associated with diseases or pests, we are waiting for you to come back with clear photos and a complete description. The evolution of the conifers in the future cannot be specified.-

Recommended articlesClClaudiu26 September 2023ClClaudiu28 September 2023I also have a puppy and some kitties that come to visit from the neighbors, I think they have a contribution to the leaf wilting as well. Is there any treatment? Thank you!
Indeed, pet urine can cause portions of the plant to dry out, and in the case of thuja shrubs it often causes the blackening of some or all of the branches in question (especially the branches at the base of the tree which may come into contact with the urine). To keep pets away from plants, you can consider placing special materials for this purpose (fences, dividers).
