Thuja, fertilization plan and treatments against pests
Hello,
I have about 300 thuja trees forming a hedge and because they are next to our bed-and-breakfast, I can only prune them in October or March.
Because of the number of the plants and the size of the hedge, I do the pruning/trimming with an electric trimmer with a 45 cm blade. I have not noticed any excessive resin so far.
Would you please recommend me a preventive treatment plan against pests and a fertilization plan?
I have already used your services in April for a treatment against sooty mould with very good results.
I still water them with a drip system every day, as we still have temperatures above 22 degrees, even though we are at the end of October…
Should I stop watering them?
Thank you,

Hello. In this period, you may consider using a fertilizer with a high potassium content, such as Fertilizer 0-0-40 Azet HerbstKali, 2 kg (by spreading it around the plants, in a dose of 20 – 30 g/sqm, followed by incorporation and watering). It has the effect of increasing the resistance to frost and improving the water balance of trees and shrubs.
From spring onwards you can consider using specific fertilizers according to the recommendations on their labels: by watering the roots (Tree Shrubs, 1 litre or AMN Nordalge, 500 ml) and by foliar application (Evergreen Fluid, 350 ml or Fir Fluid, 350 ml).
As far as phytosanitary treatments are concerned, since ornamental plants can be affected by numerous pathogens (unlike certain vegetables or fruit trees where specific pests and diseases can be listed) and their attack is unpredictable (in time and space), preventive spraying is often ineffective. Thus, in general, the ornamental plants should be checked periodically, and treatments only need to be applied if pests or disease symptoms are observed. In such cases, it is advisable to seek specialist advice from the first signs of disease.

Recommended articlesBoBogdan21 October 2023Thank you for your answer! After pruning I noticed on some of the plants that I was not able to completely get rid of those blackened/very dark green parts. Do you recommend me to resume the treatment for sooty mould? Is it possible that the plants are getting too much water since the drip still works once every two days?

Hello. In this case it is recommended to remove all parts of the plant that show the specific symptoms of sooty mould, and to destroy the removed parts by burning. Subsequently, it is recommended to carry out copper treatments with fungicides such as Funguran OH 50 WP, 300 g, Bouillie Bordelaise WDG, 500 g or Champ 77 WG, 200 g, according to the instructions on the product labels. The fungicide treatments are recommended to be carried out twice during the dormancy period, on days with positive temperatures (preferably above 5℃), without strong wind or precipitation. Spray the solution as finely as possible, so as to achieve a uniform distribution on the plant, both on the leaves and stems.
Regarding watering, it is recommended to be carried out according to the recorded temperatures and rainfall, only when the soil is dry on the surface (or even in the first 5 cm from the surface). Additionally, in order to stimulate the optimal air circulation at root level, it is important to keep a portion of the soil permanently loose and without any other material around the plants, at least in the area where the roots spread.
Further monitoring of the plants’ development is recommended, and if you identify any unusual symptoms (especially the presence of pests), please come back with clear photos and detailed information.-
