Quince tree – fruit attacked by pests
Hello,
I have an old quince tree, which makes very good and big quinces, but before they are fully ripe, starting in September it begins to lose them (they fall). I noticed inside the fruit small black holes and even blackened and rotten areas. What can I do, with what and when to treat it? Thank you!Attachments:

Hello. The fruit in the picture seems to be attacked by pests (for example, the larvae of a species of moth). In this case, since the attack has already started, applying an insecticide at this stage is ineffective. Thus, after leaf fall, it is recommended to carry out treatments specific to the dormancy period, using copper-containing fungicides: Bouillie Bordelaise WDG, 50 g, Champ 77 WG, 20 g or Coppermax, 30 g and a horticultural oil: Mospilan Oil 20 SG 10, 3 g + 50 ml, Ovipron Top, 100 ml or Estiuoil, 100 ml. The treatments are recommended to be carried out on days with positive temperatures (preferably above 5℃), without strong wind or precipitation. More information is given in the following article: Winter treatments with oils and copper-based products.
During this period, it is advisable to use a fertilizer with a high potassium content and with the effect of increasing the resistance to drought and frost, as well as improving the water balance of fruit trees, such as Fertilizer 0-0-40 Azet HerbstKali, 2 kg. It is administered by spreading it around the plants in a dose of 20 – 50 g/m², followed by gentle incorporation and watering according to the recommendations on the label.
Starting from spring, in order to prevent the appearance of diseases and pests and to improve fruit production, it is recommended to carry out preventive treatments by applying specific fertilizers: Super Set, 1 litre, Artalmax Fruit, 1 litre, +Prod, 1 litre or Organic Fertilizer for Fruit Trees, 2 kg, according to the recommendations on the chosen product label.-

ZaZamfirescu3 November 2023Thank you very much for your answer! Being a novice, I would be grateful if you could guide me exactly when and how to apply these treatments both in autumn and spring. I understand that after the leaves fall but I don’t know how these solutions have to be diluted, and then sprayed on the whole tree with the backpack sprayer or how? Can I trim the crown more than usual after leaf fall? Should I apply some lime solution on the trunk 1-1,5 m from the ground? I care about it a lot and want to save/heal it quickly! Thanks!
Two treatments can be carried out, one in autumn (after leaf fall) and one in late winter or early spring (before bud opening). The treatment consists of applying a copper-containing fungicide, and 10-14 days after applying the fungicide, the application of horticultural oil is recommended. The treatments should be applied on dry bark, not covered by ice, snow or frost, on days with positive temperatures, preferably minimum 5-6°C. The solution should be sprayed as finely and evenly as possible over the entire surface of the trunk and branches. Start from the inside of the crown outwards and from the top of the crown towards the base of the tree.
Tree cleaning works should be carried out before treatments. These involve removing affected branches, aged bark and moss, which can harbour insects, larvae and eggs during the trees’ dormancy. For more information please read our article: Winter treatments with oils and copper-based products.
In order to protect the trunk from future cracks (which occur due to the action of environmental conditions), you may consider using a product such as White Paste Tree Protection Weißanstrich, 1.5 kg or Protekt Bio Plantella, 1.5 kg, applied according to the recommendations on the label (also mentioned on the product page). Additionally, they protect the bark from frost and high temperatures, increase the elasticity of the bark and prevent overwintering pests.-
