Orchids, white spots on the leaves

Hello, these spots have appeared on the leaves, although new leaves and new stems grow, the leaves end up with these white dry spots. This year they all flowered, they were very beautiful. This winter they have only just started to grow new stems, when these spots have appeared. In the summer we changed the soil because they had some small white bugs. I keep them on a closed balcony where they have both sun and shade. I water them once every 2-3 weeks.

Hello. Please give us more details about the environmental conditions, the location of the plants (if they are near the window) and their care (when the symptoms started, how you water the plants and at what intervals, the source of the water, if you have carried out any treatments, if you have fertilized them and any other relevant information). Also, please tell us if the containers in which the plants are kept have water drainage holes.

Hello. They are placed away from the window, we water them every 3 weeks, and they are put in two containers – one with drainage holes and one without. The water I use is tap water and I did not treat them. I just changed the soil in the summer because they had some small white bugs (I took them out, washed the roots with water, changed the container they were in, planted them in that orchid substrate and that’s it. They were doing very well afterwards. I tend to think it’s from the cold, the temperature on the balcony has changed. There is heat but not as much as in the house – it’s colder than in the house. I didn’t move them because 2 years ago they dried out very badly in the house and didn’t have the same light source. The stains have been appearing for about a month and a half.

Hello. The yellowing of orchid leaves, accompanied by white necrotic spots, as in the photos, are symptoms similar to sunburn. It is important to know that the window glass acts like a lens, amplifying the intensity of the sun’s rays coming through. In general, orchids prefer bright spaces, but they should be placed at a considerable distance from the window, behind a fine curtain that filters the strong sunlight. Although orchids are light-loving plants, they do not react favorably to too much light, as this together with the accompanying heat causes burns on the leaves. In this case, it is recommended to place them in another spot, away from direct sunlight or protect them by hanging a thin curtain to filter the light. The affected leaves will not recover and as new leaves grow, it is advisable to remove the damaged ones. For general health maintenance, regeneration and protection of orchids, it is recommended to apply a special fertilizer such as Biplantol Orchid, 500 ml, administered as specified in the product description. More information and tips on the care of Phalaenopsis orchids can be found in our article in the Armuro Community: Orchid, plant care and growing guide .
