Aphids, Japanese willow, small black insects
Hello. I have a Japanese Willow, which for a few days has started to have on it clusters of something that look like small, black, hairy bugs. If I smash them, they seem to release a blood-like substance. They don’t look like ticks. Any idea what they might be and what I can get rid of them with? Thanks

Hello! The insects that can be seen in the attached photo are aphids. Against them it is recommended to treat with Teppeki, 1.5 g, together with an adjuvant such as Break Thru S 240, 2 ml (which is added to the prepared solution). Dissolve according to the label recommendations and apply by foliar spraying as evenly as possible on the willow, both on the underside and on the topside of the leaves.
Subsequently, depending on the evolution of the attack, 7-10 days after treatment with Teppeki, 1.5 g, it is recommended to alternate with an insecticide such as Deltasap 2.5 EC, 5 ml, and to add to the solution Break Thru S 240, 2 ml.At the same time as the treatments are carried out, in order to ensure the necessary nutrients and to increase the tree’s resistance to frost and other unfavorable conditions during the cold season, it is recommended to use a granular fertilizer such as Fertilizer 0-0-40 Azet HerbstKali, 2 kg. Additionally, in the future, in order to detect the presence of pests (aphids, flies, etc.) in time and to be able to apply a treatment at an early stage of the attack, it is recommended to use an adhesive trap such as: Interior & Garden Insect Trap. The pests are attracted by the colour of the paper and stick to the special adhesive. The photo also shows the presence of lady bugs (Cocinella). These are beneficial insects, being natural predators for aphids.

BoBogdan2 December 2023Thank you for your answer. The thing is that on the leaves I don’t see anything. All these aphids are lingering in the middle of the trunk. I will try to apply the products. Is there anything for these aphid eggs too? I have to mention that on other trees (on leaves) I have aphid infestations (very small black lice) that I have always solved with Teppeki. The problem is that all autumn ants are crawling around the tree and bringing with them aphid larvae. What could I use now to get rid of them in spring? Thanks
The insecticides work against aphids, regardless of their stage of development. The solution should be applied to the leaves, branches and trunk. The ants’ presence is due to the substance released by the aphids, also called “honey dew”, which contains sugar in its composition and attracts them. Controlling aphids will also reduce the number of ants. Also, for long-lasting protection against ants, you can consider applying a protective adhesive such as Caterpillar Glue Green, 250 g, to the trunk. This is applied directly to the trunk of the trees.
