Sycamore lace bug (Corythucha ciliata) – pest management

The sycamore lace bug, Corythucha ciliata, is a species native to North America, which affects the leaves of the plane tree, but sometimes also attacks the ash. In Europe, the insect was first discovered in 1964 in Padua, Italy.

Description. The adult is small, between 4-6 mm long, and the body is flattened. The head is light gray, the eyes are well developed, but the ocelli are missing, and the antennae are short. The thorax has three pairs of legs with two joints, equipped with strong and sharp nails. The abdomen is black-gray with a pair of almost transparent elytra. The larvae are oval, brown, and the body is covered with small spines. The larvae go through five evolutionary stages and the wings appear at the end of the last stage. A female can lay between 285-350 eggs, 0.5 mm long, black.

Biology. The forms that overwinter appear mainly on sunny days, while on cold days, they hide in the foliage under the trees. About 10 days they feed and mate, and after this period the females begin to lay eggs. The eggs are laid mainly on the leaf vein, individually or in groups of 10. The egg-laying process takes about 2 minutes, after which the eggs are covered with a sticky secretion to protect them. Eggs hatch between 15-21 days later. The larvae begin to feed immediately after hatching and start to grow immediately. At the end of the third day, they start to shed, and if the temperature is lower, this period can be extended by 1-2 days.

Damage. The feeds exclusively on plane tree leaves but occasionally prefers ash as well. On plane trees, insects gather in groups on the underside of the leaves, especially near the main ribs. Adults and larvae sting and suck the intracellular fluid of plants, and in the case of a massive infestation the leaves can turn yellow and dry out.

Pest management. Since there are currently no known insecticides approved in our country, during the flight stage, treatments can be carried out with broad-spectrum insecticides to control the sycamore lace bug.

Controlling the insects in urban areas

The population of these insects has increased significantly in recent years, is considered an invasive species in several areas. Although it is a pest that affects ornamental trees, this insect can cause discomfort through stings and mild skin irritation. For this reason, the fight against the sycamore lace bug also targets the public hygiene sector.

Thus, in urban areas, it is recommended that these treatments be performed by specialized control operators. The treatments are applied with insecticides used in public hygiene, in the areas where the presence of this pest is observed.

Because the effectiveness of the treatment depends on the equipment used, it is recommended to apply the solution with ULV or LV devices. These generate strong currents that can penetrate through dense vegetation.
