It was introduced to Europe in 1601 by the French royal gardeners Jean Robin and Vespasien Robin, from whom the genus derives its name. It is a second-growth tree that can grow to a height of 25-30 m and has a longevity of about 100 years. The bark of the trunk has numerous cracks, the crown is irregularly shaped and the young branches have thorns.
