Thuja, they’re potted and they’ve turned yellow
Hello. I have 2 potted thuja shrubs, about 4 years old. After this winter I noticed that they are quite yellow and one of them has a small area where the leaves are brittle.
I started watering them once a week with 2l. The soil is damp.(In the first picture is that area that crumbles when touched)

Hello. In this case, if you have not noticed any distinctive unusual symptoms (insects, larvae, holes, deposits, growths, mold or other), the deterioration has most likely occurred as a result of abiotic factors such as insufficient space for optimal root development, disproportionate root and crown size, substrate depletion and lack of essential nutrients, unfavorable environmental conditions and others, depending on the case. Furthermore, it is known that the thuja shrubs last for a limited period of time in pots – therefore, the evolution of the conifers in the photographs cannot be predicted.
For the time being, it is recommended to remove all the damaged plant parts (dry, crumbly) and to gently loosen the top layer of the substrate in the pots. Afterwards, considering that nutrients are limited in the pot, it is recommended to fertilize the conifer regularly with specific products (e.g. AMN BonaVita, 500 ml or AMN Nordalge, 500 ml by watering at the roots and Fir Fluid, 350 ml by foliar spraying, as recommended on the products labels). Further, it is recommended to ensure the optimal environmental and care conditions, detailed in our article: Thuja, planting guide and care work. Watering is recommended to be carried out regularly, when the substrate is dry on the surface, with optimal amounts of liquid, avoiding any excess ( the water should not stagnate at the root level, in the container or in the tray).-

If you have not identified the presence of specific pests or symptoms of certain diseases (Conifer pests: information and treatments and Conifer diseases: affected needles, branches and cones), it is only recommended to administer the fertilizers mentioned in the previous answer.

I have placed the order. I also have these in pots. Last summer I saved them under your guidance because they were covered with white lice. Can I apply now AMN BonaVita, 500 ml by watering at the roots?

VlVlad15 March 2024Is it recommended to trim them now before I start spraying them? To maintain their shape?
In the case of the Euonymus plant, you can take into account pruning during this period. For the other two species (thuja and buxus), trimming/pruning is recommended in May. More information on this topic can be found in our articles: Euonymus, planting guide and care work, Boxwood, planting guide and care work and Thuja, planting guide and care work, respectively Trimming and pruning ornamental species.
