Thuja, pruning 15-year-old shrubs
Hello, I would like to ask for some advice on how to prune the thuja shrubs.
Specifically, on a plot of land in a hilly area I have 30 thuja shrubs surrounding part of the plot (they are a mixture of columnaris and emerald thuja). Their planting took place 10-15 years ago. They have done quite well so far, helped by fertilizers (granules and liquid), with the exception of the inner part of the bushes that has partially defoliated in the last few years, but I understood from what I read in the articles on your site that this is a normal phenomenon, especially as some of them are planted towards the north with a forest that gives quite a lot of shade right behind.
The trees have grown very tall, the first ones of the series planted 15 years ago have even reached a height of 8 or 10 meters but the trunks that are branching right in the middle of a shrub (there are 4-5-6 trunks) have remained without foliage – at least two or three trunks are now almost bare. The initial planting distance between the saplings in the initial phase was 1.5 – 2m. At this point they are quite close to each other, in some places the branches overlap and blend in.
The question is, because they have never been pruned , would partial or total pruning of these inner trunks help the shrub to thicken in the future? Or how can they still be trimmed now? What are the rules for this type of pruning so that the foliage can still be dense?Thank you,

Hello. Indeed, the vigorous growth of these plant species can be stimulated by pruning. However, in the case of older and larger plants that have not been pruned in the past, the bare crowns often remain leafless even after pruning (because these parts of the plant remain in the shade compared to the upper part of the crown). More detailed information on this type of work can be found in our article: Trimming and pruning ornamental species.
In order to strengthen the crowns and stimulate the leaves to grow, you can consider providing the necessary nutrients by administering specific fertilizers: radicular (e.g. Tree Shrubs, 1 litre or AMN Nordalge, 500 ml) and foliar (e.g. Evergreen Fluid, 350 ml or Fir Fluid, 350 ml). During the growing season a root and foliar fertilizer can be applied regularly, following the recommendations in the product description of the chosen products. More information on this subject can be found in our articles: Thuja, planting guide and care work and Conifers, planting guide and care work.-
