Thuja, the leaves have changed their color
Hello, I would like to ask if this thuja is attacked by any disease. The needles or leaves are not dry, they have just changed their color. They are just like the green ones, just a different color. Does it need to be sprayed with anything? When I noticed the color I applied Champ. Should I spray it with something else and after how long could I administer a fertilizer. Thank you for your possible answer.

Hello. In order to help you with recommendations, please mention the age of the conifer and when the symptoms of deterioration started. Also, describe the environmental conditions in the area (soil, temperatures, wind, precipitation, exposure), indicate if there have been any changes or various works around the shrub (digging, construction site, spilled substances, materials deposited), if you have watered the plant (how much, when), if the soil at the base of the conifer is wet at any time, and any other information that may be relevant in this case. Also, please attach several photos of the conifer as a whole (including the soil at its base), as well as close-up photos, focusing on the symptoms (check carefully if you notice any holes, resin leaks with sawdust, webs, deposits, delimited discoloration, growths or other).
AdAdriana31 March 2024Hello, thank you for your reply. I don’t remember exactly when I planted the shrubs, this one I think is more than 7 years old. I bought them when they were very small. They have grown very slowly but very beautifully. Up until recently, around the end of March, it had no problems. Only this one has brown leaves but they are not falling yet, they are not dry. They are still as hard as the green ones. They are only towards the top, on the inside it has no problems. I covered the soil as you can see in the picture with hard weed barrier fabric, not wth the soft one. I laid it for weeds but also to keep the soil moist in the summer when it’s a drought. But this one has been placed for about 3 years. The wind is not too strong but the way it is affected it looks like from the air. No digging has been done in the area, we are on a hilly area, there are no leaks or drains nearby. We water them in summer when it’s dry and in spring we clean them on the inside (if there is anything dry) and we spray them with Dithane or Champ. When I saw that the shrubs were growing very slowly I got something for conifers to simulate their growth. Thank you very much for your answers.

AdAdriana1 April 2024Hello. The color change can be caused by various climatic, soil and/or care conditions (e.g. frost, sunburn, sudden temperature fluctuations, inadequate humidity), in association with various phytopathogenic agents (possibly of fungal or bacterial nature, but it cannot be accurately determined on the basis of the attached photos and the information provided). While some diseases are curable, for others there is no remedy, the only option being the removal and destruction of the specimen by burning. For an accurate identification, you may consider a laboratory analysis at a Plant Protection Institute in your area.
For the time being, you may consider removing the damaged plant parts by cutting (Power Pruner) and carrying out an additional treatment with Champ 77 WG, 200 g. Additionally, it is recommended to remove the gravel and the fabric at the base of the plants and to gently loosen the topsoil. These materials (as well as any other natural or synthetic materials) keep high and constant humidity at soil level, block the normal circulation of air at root level, thus favoring the development and propagation of pathogens. It is important to keep a permanently loose and clear portion of soil around the conifers, at least in the area where the roots spread.
Next, it is recommended to ensure the optimal growing conditions, as described in our article: Thuja, planting guide and care work. It is recommended to continue fertilizing with the products you already have: AMN Trees, 500 ml by watering at the roots, respectively Fir Fluid, 350 ml by foliar spraying, as recommended on the labels. Given the current condition of the conifer and those mentioned, it is not possible to say exactly how it will develop in the future.-
