Thuja, they look really bad, they’re not green
Hello…I have 19 thuja shrubs and they look very bad…I mean they are not green…I think some of the brown parts are the seeds…It’s just a guess…I looked and they don’t look like insects or spider mites…I took pictures…please help me with some fungicide or fertilizer recommendation or something. Thank you!

Hello. Indeed, in the attached photos you can see both the brown cones of the conifers and some symptoms of decay. In order to be able to help you with recommendations, please mention the age of the plants or the time of planting, when the symptoms of deterioration (browning) started, describe the environmental conditions in the area (soil, temperatures, wind, precipitation, light exposure), mention if you have watered them (how much, when, the water source), if you have applied fertilizers in the past, if you have carried out phytosanitary treatments, as well as any other information that may be relevant in this case. Also, please attach several close-up photographs, focusing on the symptoms of decay (check carefully if you notice any holes, deposits, delimited discolorations, growths or other).
PEPopescu Eusebiu14 March 2024The plants are around 12 years old I think…the area is in the countryside…I have not applied anything so far…I usually water them in summer…the last watering was yesterday…the second last in August…I planted them 3 years ago…I don’t see any pests… only dry leaves…the area is in the countryside…thuja shrubs grow well here…I have about 120 thuja planted and they are all green…only the ones on the street are like this…my neighbor has them also on the street and they are very green with no dry parts

It is known that abundant fruiting signals the maturity of the conifers. It is also known that some specimens may respond to conditions of physiological stress by fruiting profusely (to ensure their genetic succession). Thus, it can be said that abundant fruiting can be associated with either a good conifer condition or with physiological stress. Additionally, in case of abundant fruiting the plant becomes weaker and more sensitive to biotic and abiotic conditions, investing its energy primarily in fruit and seed production.
In this case, it is possible that the slight deterioration may be caused by a combination of abiotic factors, such as the presence of harmful salts in the soil (e.g. from salt leakage used for road de-icing), the inferior quality of the soil on the area in question, or other unfavorable factors, depending on the case. As it can be seen in the attached photos that the browning is predominantly located in the lower part of the thuja shrubs, it is recommended to remove these damaged plant parts. It is also recommended to remove the weed layer around the conifers and to loosen the topsoil, at least in the area where the roots spread.
Subsequently, in order to facilitate the overcoming of this period of stress, it is recommended to apply a foliar fertilizer such as Terra-Sorb Foliar, 250 ml, according to the instructions in the product description. You can also apply a fertilizer with a soil-improving effect which stimulates the expansion of the roots, such as AMN Nordalge, 500 ml or AMN BonaVita, 500 ml, by watering at the roots, according to the instructions in the description of the chosen product.
During the growing season, it is recommended to ensure optimal growing conditions (Thuja, planting guide and care work) and to keep the plants under observation. If you identify unusual symptoms (pests, holes, deposits, growths, delimited discolorations, etc.), please come back with further information and close-up photos.-
