Thuja, they have weed foil, stone and drip irrigation hose – still not green in winter
I planted in April 2023 around 200 thuja Brabant. I placed weed foil, stone and I use a drip irrigation hose. I have applied fertilizer and sprayed with everything that was necessary. I want to know based on the pictures I have attached if this is what they should look like. Shouldn’t they be green?

Hello. It is known that a slight change of color during the cold season can be a common symptom in some species or varieties of conifers. In this case, the color change could be accentuated by a combination of factors, such as high and constant humidity in the soil (accentuated by the presence of weed foil and possibly excessive watering), the stress suffered during planting and the change in environmental conditions (Ornamental trees and shrubs - Planting guide), unfavorable climatic and soil conditions, and possibly the occurrence of phytopathogens, etc.
For the time being, given the time of year we are in, you may consider removing the foil and the gravel at the base of the conifers. It is also recommended to gently loosen the topsoil around the shrubs. Additionally, if you notice completely dry branches, you may consider removing them by cutting with a sharp and disinfected tool (e.g. Power Pruner).
Next, it is recommended to ensure optimal growing conditions, as described in our article: Thuja, planting guide and care work. To revitalize and stimulate the root expansion, you may consider using a fertilizer such as Root stimulator Wurzel-Fit, 2.25 Kg, immediately after removing the foil.
Given the current condition of the conifers in the attached documents, it is not possible to predict their future development. In case you notice other symptoms of deterioration (presence of pests, holes, delimited discolorations, deposits, outgrowths or others), please come back with clear, focused photos or additional information.-

If I remove the foil the weeds grow a lot. If I remove the foil is it better? I ask because I don’t know. Thank you.
Regarding the use of various materials at the base of conifers, you should bear in mind that in the climatic conditions of our country, it is generally recommended to keep a portion of loose soil, free of vegetation or other materials (including mulch, gravel, decorative bark or others) around the plants, at least in the area where the roots spread. These can maintain a higher level of humidity, do not allow the proper circulation of air at root level, contribute to soil compaction, thus favouring the development and spread of plant pathogens.
The weeds around conifers can be removed periodically by hand.AuthorPostsViewing 3 reply threadsWas this discussion helpful?
