Palm tree, white fuzz on the leaves and stem
Hello, I have a Cycas revoluta and since the beginning of summer a white solution has started to appear on it. I didn’t give it any importance at the beginning but slowly the plant starts to die. It is withering slowly, day by day. Please help me with some advice. Thanks

Hello! From the attached pictures it is difficult to identify the pest exactly. A white fuzz can be seen, and this white fuzz is characteristic of two pests: Metcalfa pruinosa (citrus flatid planthopper) or Eriosoma lanigerum (woolly apple aphid). The symptoms of the two pests are very similar and can only be established by closer examination. Please check if when you remove that fuzz, you notice the presence of a butterfly (cicada), or if you notice the presence of woolly aphids (they are more visible and move more slowly than the cicadas), and when they are crushed, they release a reddish substance. Please attach clear, close-up pictures of both the leaves and the stem. Please also specify the environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, light, how often it was watered).
mimihai7 November 2023It’s been sitting in the garden all summer, 28-30 degrees, the white solution is very oily and has something brown in it from what I can see. That’s about all the details I can give.

mimihai7 November 2023Regarding the watering, I water it with a hose once every 3-4 days
Hello! The Cycas palm is attacked by woolly aphids (Mealybugs in ornamental plants - pest management). Our recommendations on treatments that can be applied, as well as other useful tips, are described in a similar topic in the Armuro Community: https://www.armuro.com/en/forums/about/cycas-revoluta-treatment-against-mealybugs/. Controlling these pests can be more difficult, so it is recommended to remove the heavily affected parts of the plant before carrying out the treatments. After they die, these pests can remain on the stem and leaves, so it is recommended to remove them with a damp sponge from the healthy leaves.
