Palm tree, brown spots on the stems and dry leaves
The palm tree has been in a heated, closed balcony since the beginning. It did well after I treated it for mealybugs with Mospilan, but for about 8 months some brown spots appeared on the stems and the leaves started to dry out. I should mention that they are embossed and some can be cleaned with a fingernail. It was only watered after the soil was dry and there were no big temperature variations or draughts. What to do?

Hello. In order to help you with recommendations and advice, please attach more clear photos (of the whole plant, its stems and deteriorated leaves) and give us more details about the growth and care of this specimen: what are the environmental conditions (light, temperature, humidity), if there is a heat source in the vicinity of the plant, if you spray the plant with water, if you have fertilized it, and any other relevant information. Also, please check the plant carefully and let us know if you notice any other symptoms (fine webs or spots on the leaves and petiole) or pests. If you notice any symptoms of disease/pests, please attach clear and relevant photos of them.
LaLaurentiu20 March 2024The plant has had natural light, being in a balcony located towards E-SE. The temperature is between 30 and 20 degrees Celsius. I did not apply any fertilizers. Two months ago I started spraying it with Mospilan 3 g/10l water, thinking it had pests but nothing happened.

From the inserted photos, the appearance of the stems is normal for this species, and as far as the deterioration of the leaves is concerned, it could be caused by one or more factors, such as: inadequate watering (watering is recommended to be carried out when the first 3-5 cm of substrate have dried out), the possible low temperature of the watering liquid, low atmospheric humidity, possibly the lack of soil fertilization, the reduced size of the pot etc. In this case, it is recommended to remove the severely damaged leaves and repot the plant (Indoor plants - Repotting) in a container of optimal size, using a substrate that is specially designed for green plants (Green Plants Professional Substrate, 10 litres). After transplanting, for a better rooting of the plant in the new substrate, it is recommended to apply 2-3 treatments with a fertilizer such as AMN BonaVita, 500 ml. For a good development of the plant and to provide the necessary nutrients, 7-10 days after the administration of AMN BonaVita, 500 ml, you can consider applying a fertilizer such as Wuxal Green Plants and Palm Fertilizer Palmendünger, 1 litre, administered by watering, according to the information in the product description. To increase the atmospheric humidity it is recommended to spray the plants with water using a sprayer such as Tech1 or to place containers of water near the plant or to use a humidifier. More information and tips on growing and caring for the species can be found in our article in the Armuro Community: Palm trees, plant care and growing guide.
