Oleander, pest identification, mealybug attack
Hello,
I have an Oleander purchased from a shop. It was infested with aphids and I managed to save it with your help.
I transplanted it since I purchased it, the soil used was: “Floria, substrate for green plants and palms”.
During the summer we kept it outside and during the winter it stayed in the hallway of the building. It had natural light, was watered relatively regularly, not abundantly, the soil being relatively moist.
Now it seems to be infested with mealybugs
I couldn’t tell you the exact onset of the symptoms, but a few days ago I found a translucent white fuzz at the tip of a shoot.
No other symptoms at the moment. The leaves are green, clean, no spots, discoloration or deposits. The only spots, if I can call them that, are a few small clumps of translucent white fuzz.
I have not carried out any treatment against this problem yet. -
Hello! In order to be able to identify the pest and to be able to offer you a solution, please attach some clear, close-up photos of the pest that you can see and of the plant as a whole. Please also mention how the plant is currently cared for and the environmental conditions (water source, watering frequency, light, temperature, etc.).
CCCornelia Covete10 March 2024Hello,
I have attached some photos of the oleander.. I hope they are clear enough.
As for the environmental conditions, at the moment it is still in the hallway of the building, until it warms up I am not taking it outside.
Water source: tap, other water unfortunately I don’t have, I water it relatively regularly, as I said in the original post, not excessively, only when the top layer of the soil is dry (the first 2-3 cm). Otherwise the soil is lightly damp.
The temperature in the hallway of the building does not drop below 15°C even in winter.
It receives both natural light throughout the day (I live on the ground floor) and artificial light.Attachments:

Hello! From the attached pictures, the oleander is indeed attacked by mealybugs (Mealybugs in ornamental plants - pest management). Against them you can carry out a first treatment with the insecticide Mavrik 2 F, 5 ml, in a dose of 5 ml/10 L water, and 7 days after this treatment, you can carry out a second treatment with the insecticide Movento 100 SC, 7.5 ml, in a dose of 7.5 ml/10 L water. In order to increase the effectiveness of the insecticides, it is recommended to add an adjuvant such as Break Thru S 240, 2 ml, in a dose of 2 ml/10 L to the solutions. Spray the mixture as finely as possible (Manual Sprayer Solo 201), so that it is distributed evenly on the plant, on the topside and underside of the leaves and on the stem. If you have other plants in the vicinity of the infested one, you can apply the treatment to them as well. Afterwards, 10-14 days after the treatments, it is recommended to apply a foliar spray fertilizer such as Contra X, 500 ml, as recommended in the product description.
It is important to mention that, after they die, these pests can remain attached to the leaves/stem, therefore, it is recommended to remove them with a damp sponge (if possible). To overcome the period of stress caused by the attack of pests, it is recommended to apply a fertilizer such as Vital NT, 250 ml or Wuxal Flowers Fertilizer Blütenpracht, 1 litre. One of these should be applied by watering at two week intervals, following the instructions on the label.
For more information about the specific care requirements of the oleander you can consult our article: Oleander, plant care and growing guide.-
