Kalanchoe, stained leaves, oedema
Hello, I have a few Kalanchoe plants, they are all growing well and are beautiful, vigorous but have not bloomed for some time and have these problems on the leaves. It looks like an internal problem but if you scratch it with your fingernail it peels off the leaves. I have checked the soil and there is nothing wrong with it, I don’t see anything moving on it, the leaves are not weak but they have this ugly appearance. What can I do to make it disappear and help them bloom?

Hello! In order to help you with a recommendation, please give us more details: were fertilizers administered? If yes, what fertilizer was applied and how often? How often is watering carried out and in what quantity? What are the environmental conditions (light, humidity, temperature)?
MPMihaela Puscasu3 December 2023The plants are in the office, where they enjoy plenty of light, with glass walls. The temperature here is constantly between min 19 degrees at night – max 24 degrees during the day. They are watered maximum once a week when I water the other plants. I have not used any fertilizers, I do not change their place, they are not moved, there are no insects, the space is ventilated. I received the plant this year – it was much smaller, it grew very well and very fast, it has big fleshy leaves, but it didn’t flower this year. And now it has this snakeskin look. If I try to clean it with a fine knife I manage to do it but it injures it.

On the leaves in the picture there seems to be an oedema present. Oedema can occur as a result of abiotic stress, and the most common cause is high humidity in the substrate. Under these conditions, the roots absorb water at a faster rate than the plant can remove it through transpiration. In this case, to avoid new oedemas forming, it is advisable to water moderately (avoiding the stagnation of water in the tray), allowing the substrate to dry out slightly before watering again. Kalanchoe is a succulent plant and should not be watered as often as most green-leaved plants.
More information about the care of the plant can be found in our article: Kalanchoe, plant care and growing guide.
As a preventive measure, to avoid the appearance of pathogens in the substrate, you can consider a treatment with a biological fungicide such as Dynamic, 100 g. This is applied by watering at the roots, in a dose of 10 g/ 10 L water.
Additionally, you may also consider using a fertilizer that is specially formulated for the nutritional requirements of succulent plants, such as Kakteendunger Bonsai & Cacti Fertilizer, 250 ml, applied according to the recommendations on the label.-
