Dracaena, falling leaves, soft stem
Hi.
I’ve had this plant for about 5 months and in the last month I’ve noticed that the leaves have started to fall off and the tips have started to dry out.
Now from what I can see, the stem at the top from where the leaves are growing has softened and looks quite nasty. I’ve been reading about the problems these plants can have, but it doesn’t seem to have any pests.. and I water it every week or so. The problem is with the big tree. There’s another smaller tree that looks better, but it too has had a few leaves falling off.Attachments:

Hello. In order to help you with some recommendations, please attach some photos of the whole plant (including the pot). Also, please mention the environmental conditions in the area where the pot is located: light, air humidity, draughts, temperature (i.e. how close the plant is to a heat source), etc. In addition, please mention whether or not the pot has any water drainage holes, how much liquid you use for watering and its source, and whether or not the substrate is mostly dry before watering (on the surface or in the first few centimeters).
CrCristina5 March 2024Hello,
The plant is in the bathroom, where it is placed quite close to a radiator. I have attached a picture. It has light, but not direct sun, it is placed away from the window. The air humidity is low, I spray it with plain water from time to time. The temperature is quite high, somewhere around 24 degrees. As for draughts, that would just be the case when the window is open. The pot has holes and I wait for the soil to dry (it seems quite dry when I try to stick my hand in it a bit) before I water it again, with tap water. It may be too hot for it and I don’t think that spraying it with water has helped either. I should also mention that I didn’t change its pot, it is as it came – with the same soil.Attachments:

In this case, it is most likely that the slight deterioration may have been due to a combination of abiotic and biotic factors. As the stem in the first photo seems to be affected (rotten), it is recommended to remove it by cutting until healthy, green tissue remains.
Subsequently, two treatments with a fungicide such as Dynamic, 100 g, at an interval of 7 days are recommended. This is administered by watering at the roots, in a dose of 10 g/ 10 L water. It is important that the volume of the prepared solution corresponds to a single treatment (respecting the mentioned dosage), because the already prepared mixture does not have a shelf life longer than 24 hours.
We also recommend the foliar application of a fertilizer that stimulates the healthy growth of plants and improves the photosynthesis process, such as Organic Spray for Indoor Plants Zimmerpflanzen, 500ml or Leaf Shine Spray Blatt-Fit, 500 ml, according to the instructions on the label of each product.
As Dracaena is a tropical species, it prefers higher atmospheric humidity. If you consider it necessary, to increase the humidity, you can spray the plant with water using a sprayer such as Tech1. You can also consider placing containers of water near the plant or using a humidifier. Watering is recommended to be carried out with sufficient quantities of water at longer intervals, allowing the substrate to dry slightly on the surface. If tap water is used, it is recommended to keep it in an open container for at least 24 hours before use. It is essential that the pot has drainage holes and that the water does not stagnate in the tray. High and constant humidity in the substrate favors the development and spread of plant pathogens.
For more information on how to care for your plant, please read this article in the Armuro Community: Dracaena, plant care and growing guide. Given the current condition of the stem in the first photo and the above mentioned, the future development of the plant cannot be accurately predicted.-
