Dieffenbachia, small black pests and burnt leaves
Hello🤗 I’ve had this diffenbachia from Kaufland for about 3 months now, and in the last month the new leaves look burnt, are very small and don’t have their characteristic colour. The more mature leaves are being eaten, I think by some parasites? They are like little fleas that sit on the underside of the leaves. How could I save it? Thank you!

Hello, please give us more information about the care of the plant: the location, frequency of watering, the amount of water applied, the quality of the water, the type of substrate, temperature, humidity and any other relevant information. Also, please let us know if you have fertilized or treated your plants so far. Also, please send us focused photos of the pests on the underside of the leaves and tell us if you notice any fine webs, white powder, sticky substances etc. on the surface of the leaves or on the stem of the plant.
NMNicola Maria-Teodora30 January 2024Hello,
The plant is in the living room, the temperature is 24-25 degrees, I don’t use a humidifier in the house. The plant is watered about every 3-4 days with about 200 ml of water because when I water it less often the leaves seem to droop. All the leaves eaten by those fleas have been cut off, however they still exist on some of the leaves and in the soil. You can’t see them very clearly in the pictures as they are extremely small, but they are moving. The soil is the same since I bought them because I didn’t change the pots. I should probably change the soil, what do you recommend? Both pots have the same pest present on the leaves and in the soil. In the meantime the plants have regained their specific colouring and the leaves no longer stay droopy. I have not used any fertilizer or treatment. I just cleaned the eaten leaves and started watering them every 3-4 days. I can’t tell if the parasite on the leaves is the same as the one in the soil. When I take the plant out of the pot I see that it is present all the way down to the roots. How can I get rid of it? Thank you.Attachments:

NMNicola Maria-Teodora31 January 2024I don’t see any fine webs, white powder or sticky substances. There are some kind of flies in the soil, maybe I water them too often? And some extremely small black and long larvae on the leaves.
Thanks in advanceHello, from the photos you have inserted, the plant seems to be attacked by thrips (Thrips - pest management). Against these pests you can carry out 1-2 treatments, 7-10 days apart, with the insecticide Vertimec 1.8 EC, 10 ml, in a dose of 5 ml/10 L water. To increase the effectiveness of the insecticide, it is recommended to add an adjuvant such as Break Thru S 240, 2 ml, in a dose of 2 ml/10 L to the solution.
Spray the solution as finely as possible, so as to achieve an even distribution of the solution on the plant, both on the underside and topside of the leaves and on the stem. It is advisable to prepare a volume of solution corresponding to a single treatment (respecting the mentioned dosage), as the already prepared mixture does not have a shelf life longer than 24 hours. Treatments can also be applied to the other plants in the premises (if necessary). Additionally, for monitoring and catching pests, it is recommended to use an adhesive trap for thrips (Impact Blue, 10 x 25 cm) – the pests are attracted by the color of the paper (blue) and stick to the special adhesive.
To help the plant overcome this stressful period, 7-10 days after the insecticide treatments are completed, it is recommended to apply a foliar fertilizer such as Organic Spray for Indoor Plants Zimmerpflanzen, 500ml. If you wish to change the substrate, transplanting is recommended to be done in spring (Indoor plants - Repotting), and the substrate used should be one specially designed for green plants (Green Plants Professional Substrate, 10 litres). More information on the care of the species can be found in our article in the Armuro Community: Dieffenbachia, plant care and growing guide.-
