      Dieffenbachia, leaf and stem spots

Hello. I have had this plant for 3 years. So far it has developed very well, but a few months ago this “disease” or pest appeared, which seems to affect it more and more, including a new plant. In the pictures there are 2 plants, one in a brown pot (first 2 pictures) and a new seedling that developed from it last year (in a grey pot) on which the leaves are starting to turn brown on the edges. Both are in a room with 23-24 degrees, with natural light. They are watered once a week and no treatments have been applied. Thank you very much

Hello. In order to help you with recommendations and advice, please give us more information about the location and maintenance of the plants: if there is a heat source and/or cold draughts in the vicinity, if the atmospheric humidity is low, what is the temperature and source of the water for irrigation, if the water reaches and stagnates at the stem of the plants and if you have applied any fertilizers.

Thank you for your prompt response. The plant in the brown pot with the white spot on the stem is in the attic. It has no heat source nearby (there is only one radiator in the room). The water used is at room temperature from the tap. It stagnates a bit at the surface and then goes into the soil. I haven’t applied anything because I don’t know what would be useful for it. The youngest one in the grey pot is next to a double glazed window in a room with underfloor heating. I also did not apply fertilizers on it.

The slight plant deterioration may have occurred as a result of stress caused by environmental and/or care factors: compacted or slow-draining substrate, a possible low atmospheric humidity, the presence of draughts, the quality of the water used, the lack of proper fertilization, etc. In this case, transplanting is recommended in a substrate with good drainage properties (Green Plants Professional Substrate, 10 litres) and water them with moderate amounts of liquid, only when the first 3-5 cm of the substrate have dried out (you can leave the water you use from the tap in an open container for 24 hours before watering the plants to remove the chlorine). For a well-groomed appearance of your plants you may consider removing the deteriorated leaves. It is also recommended to increase the atmospheric humidity by spraying the plants with water using a sprayer such as Tech1, placing containers of water near the plants or using a humidifier. To provide the necessary nutrients for an optimal development of the plants, you can consider using a product such as Wuxal Green Plants and Palm Fertilizer Palmendünger, 1 litre, Interior Plants Organic Fertilizer, 350 ml or Manna Plant Fertilizer Bio Pflanzennahrung, 1 litre, administered by watering, according to the instructions in the chosen product description. More information on the care of this species can be found in our article in the Armuro Community: Dieffenbachia, plant care and growing guide.
