Cypress, Chamaecyparis columnaris, planting and care tips

Hello! I bought today 40 Chamaecyparis columnaris which are 2 m tall. They are in pots. In 5 days we want to plant them in the garden.
What advice can you give us? What treatments are needed during this period? Do we need to fertilize the soil? There are a few affected branches.
      Thank you!

Hello. First of all it should be mentioned that the chance of successfully planting saplings is lower for larger specimens. Additionally, in the case of conifers an essential aspect is planting them with a root ball, and the condition of the root system is also very important (it must be well developed, without any diseases, in order to be able to support the vegetative growth during the growing season). Detailed information on planting ornamental trees and shrubs can be found in our article:Ornamental trees and shrubs - Planting guide. After planting them, in order to improve the quality of the soil, to stimulate root expansion and to increase the plants’ resistance to stress factors, you can consider using a specially formulated fertilizer, such as AMN Nordalge, 500 ml, Root Stimulator Manna Wurzelforte, 1 litre or AMN BonaVita, 500 ml (one single administration during this period, according to the instructions on the label of each product). Afterwards, from spring onwards, it is recommended to regularly fertilize the conifers with one of the above-mentioned products, by watering at the roots. Also in spring, you can consider applying a fertilizer with a revitalizing effect, such as Fir Fluid, 350 ml, by foliar spraying.

After planting, it is necessary to water thoroughly, and in the first days after planting, water daily. Afterwards, watering is recommended to be carried out according to the recorded temperatures and rainfall, only when the soil is dry on the surface. Spraying conifers with water, watering them with sprinklers or watering them together with the lawn is not recommended, because the humidity at the foliage level and the constant humidity at the base of the plants represent a favorable environment for the development and propagation of fungal diseases. It is recommended to remove the damaged parts of the plants with well sharpened and disinfected tools (e.g. Power Pruner). If you notice other symptoms that can be related to the presence of pests or fungal diseases (presence of insects, holes, very fine webs, sticky substances, deposits or others), please come back with detailed information and clear photos.
The success of planting will only be visible during the next growing season. For more information and tips on the care of this species, you can read our article: Cypress, planting guide and care work.
