Cypress, blackened portions shortly after planting
Hello! I bought a Cupressus macrocarpa Wilma Goldcrest 2 weeks ago, planted it in the garden and now I noticed that it has started to have portions that are black. I don’t know what’s wrong with it and how I could treat it. Thank you!

Hello. The blackening of some branches/rootstocks in conifers can be due to several biotic and abiotic causes, such as the stress suffered during transport, handling and planting, temperature fluctuations, poor soil quality, inadequate watering, lack of fertilizing, damage to portions of the roots, attack by phytopathogens, the effect of animal urine, etc.
For the time being, it is recommended to remove and destroy the affected branches (by burning, if possible). It is recommended to cut off the damaged parts of the plant with well sharpened and disinfected tools (e.g. Power Pruner). It is also recommended to remove the layer of decorative bark at the base of the plant, as this maintains a constant and high humidity at soil level. As the activity and spread of plant pathogens is stimulated by a constant high humidity of the soil, watering is recommended to be carried out according to the recorded temperatures and rainfall only when the ground is dry on the surface. Spraying conifers with water, watering them with sprinklers or together with the lawn is not recommended, because the humidity at the level of the foliage and the constant moisture at the base of the trees represent a favorable environment for the development and propagation of fungal diseases. It is important to keep a permanently loose and clean portion of soil around the plants, at least in the area where the roots spread.
Subsequently, after removing the damaged parts of the plant, it is recommended to apply a fertilizer that is specially formulated for the nutritional requirements of conifers, such as Evergreen Fluid, 350 ml or Fir Fluid, 350 ml, by foliar spraying. These fertilizers support the resistance of plants to stress factors, increase foliage density and help prevent deficiencies and the browning of foliage. Also, given the recently planted shrub, it is recommended to use a natural fertilizer that contributes to improving the quality of the soil, supports root development and increases the plant’s resistance to stress factors, such as AMN BonaVita, 500 ml (3-4 treatments by watering at the roots at intervals of 10-14 days).
For more detailed information on the care of this plant species, please consult our articles: Cypress, planting guide and care work and Conifer diseases: affected needles, branches and cones. Given the current condition of the conifer in the attached photos and those mentioned above, it is not possible to say exactly how it will develop in the future (the success of planting is not guaranteed). During the growing season, it is recommended to monitor the evolution of the plant, and if you notice other symptoms of deterioration (pests, holes, deposits, growths, very fine webs or others), please come back with photos and detailed information.-
