Cherry tree, cracked stem
Hello,
The cherry tree in the photos has this crack in the trunk and I wanted to ask if there is anything I can treat it with.
It’s very productive, but I just have a feeling that at some point it will suddenly die because of this diseased trunk.
Thank you,

Hello. The cracking of the bark in fruit trees can occur as a result of unfavourable weather conditions (frost, solar radiation during certain periods of the year, large temperature differences between late winter and early spring, etc.), but can also indicate the presence of diseases (for an exact identification, a laboratory analysis is necessary). Additionally, these cracks and wounds can be entry points for different diseases or pests, leading to a severe (or total) tree decline. Therefore, taking preventive measures is essential (Tree wounds and frost cracks - How do we treat them?).
For the moment, considering the appearance of the trunk’s base and the above mentioned, it is recommended to clean the dead plant tissue from the trunk (until you reach healthy tissue), with a well sharpened and disinfected tool. Then the wounds on the trunk should be treated with a copper-containing solution. Specifically, apply a copper solution with a brush, such as Bouillie Bordelaise WDG, 50 g. Dissolve one sachet of Bordeaux mixture (50 g) in a small amount of water (0.5 liters) to form a paste. Copper has a bactericidal, fungicidal effect and helps wounds heal quickly. After disinfecting thoroughly with the blue solution and allowing it to dry, a healing solution such as Tree plaster, 300 g can be applied to all existing wounds on stems and branches.
As the propagation of some pathogens is favored by high and/or constant humidity, it is recommended to remove the vegetation at the base of the tree (it maintains the humidity). It is important to keep a permanently loose and clean area of soil around the plants, at least in the area where the roots spread.
Additionally, considering the period we are in, it is recommended to use an organic fertilizer with a high potassium content, such as Fertilizer 0-0-40 Azet HerbstKali, 2 kg (by spreading it around the plants, in a dose of 20 – 30 g/m², followed by incorporation and watering, according to the instructions in the product description). This fertilizer increases the resistance to drought and frost and improves the water balance of plants. It can be applied to a wide range of species.
Furthermore, to prevent and control the spread of plant pathogens in the following period (after leaf fall) it is essential to carry out winter treatments on fruit trees, including copper treatments (against fungal diseases) and treatments with horticultural oil (against pests). More detailed information can be found in our article: Winter treatments with oils and copper-based products.
