Hello. On the trunk and branches of the cherry tree, seems to be a gummy substance (a phenomenon known as gummosis). Gummosis is not a disease itself, but a reaction of the fruit tree to stress caused by various diseases, pests (especially wood borers), mechanical injuries, cracks caused by temperature fluctuations or frost, drought, pruning in high humidity, etc. Also, the presence of gummosis is associated with the appearance of cancers that penetrate the trunk and branches via the wounds. As there are many biotic and/or abiotic factors underlying the occurrence of gummosis, it is not possible to determine exactly what caused the symptoms.
In this case, it is recommended to remove the gummy substance with a sharp and disinfected tool until healthy wood is observed. Then apply a copper-based paste such as to the wounds. One sachet of is dissolved in a small amount of water (0.5 liters) to form a paste. Copper has a bactericidal, and fungicidal effect and helps wounds heal quickly. After disinfecting thoroughly with the blue solution and allowing it to dry, it is recommended to apply a healing product: or .
In the future, in order to avoid the appearance of gummosis, it is recommended to maintain the general health of the trees by ensuring adequate humidity, pruning at optimal times, balanced fertilization, and apply the dormancy treatments, as well as those in vegetation.
Further, considering the period in which we are, in order to maintain a good phytosanitary condition, it is indicated to carry out specific dormant treatments (after leaf fall), using copper-based fungicides: or or and horticultural oil: or or . More information about dormancy treatments can be found in our article: Winter treatments with oils and copper-based products.
During this period, it is recommended to use a fertilizer with a high potassium content, such as , applied by spreading around fruit trees, followed by incorporation and watering, according to the recommendations on the label. This fertilizer increases drought and frost resistance and improves the water balance of the trees.
In order to protect the trunk from future cracks (which occur due to the action of environmental conditions), you may consider using a product such as or , applied according to the recommendations on the label (also mentioned on the product page). In addition, they protect the bark from frost and high temperatures, increase the elasticity of the bark and prevent the overwintering of various pests.
At the same time, in order to ensure balanced fertilization during a growing season, it is recommended to use specific fertilizers: ; , ; applied according to the recommendations on the label of the chosen product.
