Catalpa, pest attack, liquid clay
Hello,
I have recently discovered some mold in some spots on the branches of my catalpa. Also, the leaves are partially covered with a slimy liquid. I have several catalpa trees in my yard, only this one – being planted on an edge – is experiencing this affliction. Can you please recommend a treatment?
Thank you,
ElenaAttachments:

Hello! On the stems a white fuzz can be seen, the white fuzz is characteristic of two pests: Metcalfa pruinosa (citrus flatid planthopper) or Eriosoma lanigerum (woolly apple aphid). The symptoms of the attack of the two pests are very similar and can only be established by closer examination. Please check if when you remove that fuzz, you notice the presence of a butterfly (cicada), or if you notice the presence of mealybugs (they are more visible and move more slowly than the cicada), and when they are crushed, they release a reddish substance. Also, please attach some clear, close-up pictures.
ElElena29 October 2023Hello! They look like mealybugs. I’ve also attached some pictures showing both the white fuzz and the sticky liquid that can be found on some leaves.

From the attached pictures and the information given, the tree appears to be attacked by mealybugs (Mealybugs in ornamental plants - pest management). Thus, to control them, it is recommended to carry out two treatments, with insecticides such as Mavrik 2 F, 5 ml, in a dose of 5 ml/ 10 l water and Movento 100 SC, 7.5 ml, in a dose of 7.5 ml/ 10 l water. The first treatment is carried out with Mavrik 2 F, 5 ml, and after 7-10 days Movento 100 SC, 7.5 ml is applied. To increase the effectiveness of the insecticides, it is recommended to add an adjuvant such as Break Thru S 240, 2 ml, in a dose of 2 ml/ 10 l to the solution. The mixture is sprayed as finely as possible so as to achieve a more even distribution on the plant. Considering the period we are in, you can consider applying a fertilizer such as Fertilizer 0-0-40 Azet HerbstKali, 2 kg (which increases the plant’s resistance to frost and cold) and carrying out specific treatments during the dormancy period (after leaf fall), with copper fungicides and horticultural oil (the methodology is described in our article: Winter treatments with oils and copper-based products) More information and care tips, can be found here: Catalpa, planting guide and care work.
