      Avocado, shoots with brown tips

Hello! I have an avocado grown from seed that is about 15 years old. For 3 years it has been in the same place, in direct sunlight, inside the house. I water it every 10-14 days (when the soil is completely dry) and pour about 2L of water. Since it’s been in this spot, it’s done very well. This year in the summer it also formed some avocado fruit, but it didn’t manage to grow them. They remained at the size of 1-2 cm and then dried out. After the end of the flowering and fruiting period, it started to have some brown spots on the leaves, and if all spring and summer it had been growing beautiful new tips, now all the tips immediately turn brown (looks to me like they have a bit of mould on the tips too) and the leaves dry up and fall off. What could I do to save it? Thanks!

Hello. In order to help you with recommendations and advice, please send us more photos (showing the substrate), and give us details about the maintenance of the plant: what are the environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, substrate, etc.), if the plant is near a heat source or cold draughts, the source of the water used for watering, the temperature of the water, if you have carried out treatments or applied fertilizers, if it has been transplanted, and any other relevant information. Also, please check the plant carefully and let us know if you notice any other symptoms (deposits, powders, discolorations, white fuzz, fine webs on the underside and topside of the leaves, etc.) or pests. If you notice symptoms of disease/pests, please attach clear and relevant photos of them.

The substrate is one that was clearly good for it until a few months ago, as it has been flourishing and doing very well for at least 2 years in a row. It’s been in the same spot for 3 years now and all has been well so far. It was last fertilized with an organic product last summer when it was starting to bloom (or maybe before, I can’t remember exactly). It doesn’t sit in draughts, it is watered with cold tap water, but it is the same water I have always used, the temperature in the room is relatively constant (21-22 degrees) and it hasn’t been transplanted for at least 3-4 years. I inspected the plant very carefully and found nothing that could resemble pests nor did I find any deposits of anything else.

Hello. In this case, it is recommended to remove the affected areas and treat with a product such as Champ 77 WG, 20 g, in a dose of 20 g per 10 L of water. 7-10 days after the treatment, we recommend the use of a fertilizer specially designed for indoor plants, Wuxal Green Plants and Palm Fertilizer Palmendünger, 1 litre or Interior Plants Organic Fertilizer, 350 ml, administered by watering, as described in the products description. More tips and information on growing and caring for this species can be found in our article in the Armuro Community: Avocado, plant care and growing guide.
