Arborvitae – root worms
I have a thuja plantation, almost 20 out of 50 plants dried up in a month, when I pulled them out of the ground the roots were full of white worms – 2-3 mm with white eggs laid. What can I do with the plants that have not yet been affected and how can I prepare the place for the plants that will replace the dried plants?

Hello, to help you with a recommendation, please give us more details and attach more photos with the plants in question. More precisely, pictures with the affected parts. Please tell us where they are located, what are the environmental conditions (temperature, light, humidity), how often do you water? Have you applied any treatment or fertilizer? When did it start to show these symptoms? Is there any pest on the plant?
OVOVIDIU VASILCAN31 March 2022Hello, it was planted in March 2020. In July, began an accelerated drying process. The dried plants were next to each other – practically 14 adjacent plants dried up – only two survived. The remaining 30 pieces are ok being further away from this corner where they withered. Regarding watering, it is done periodically every 2-3 days in the evening and as a treatment, we did two treatments with Bordeaux mixture in May and June. After the plants dried I started to remove and replace them and so I noticed that under the ground it was eaten by some white worms of about 3-5mm that had laid white eggs. The roots looked intact – the worms ate the underground end of the root.

OVOVIDIU VASILCAN31 March 2022In addition: the plants are placed in the house garden and are located along the fence (to create a hedge when mature). I have not noticed any pests on the plant, just the white worms (mentioned above in the previous post )in the soil. The planting was done in March, the holes were dug by hand.
In the case of conifers, it is very important how the planting was done. Conifers should be planted with a root ball, and the root system should be well developed in proportion to the age of the tree and the vegetative part. If the root system is not properly developed or the roots have been severely pruned before purchase, there is a possibility that sometime after planting, they will start to dry out irreversibly, for no obvious reason. This process is not visible immediately but during the growing season. More information about planting conifers is presented in the following article: Ornamental trees and shrubs - Planting guide. For the control of certain soil pests, at the time of planting, it is recommended to apply an insecticide such as ( Trika Expert, 450 g ), in a dose of 100-150 g / 100 sqm. Regarding conifers that are not completely dry, it is recommended to remove the dry parts and carry out 1-2 treatments, at intervals of 7-10 days with a fungicide such as ( Curzate Manox, 25 g ), in a dose of 25g / 10 l water. Also, to help them, it is recommended to apply a stimulator such as ( Razormin, 250 ml ), 25 – 30 ml / 10 l water. You can apply 2 treatments, at an interval of 10 – 14 days.

It is recommended to remove the dry parts and to carry out 1-2 treatments, at intervals of 7-10 days with the fungicide Curzate Manox ( Curzate Manox, 25 g ), in a dose of 25 g / 10 l water. Also, to help them, it is indicated to apply a fertilizer such as AMN BonaVita, 500 ml , 30 ml / 10 l water, by watering. 2 treatments can be performed, at an interval of 10 – 14 days.
