Jasmine (Jasminum) is a genus of climbing plants that is part of the Oleaceae family. It contains 200 species that originate in the tropical and temperate regions of Europe, Asia, Australia, and Oceania. It is an indoor plant, appreciated for its special flowers, but also its fragrance.

Species. Jasminum polyanthum, known as white jasmine or pink jasmine, is a climbing plant native to China and Southeast Asia, which can grow up to 3-6 m in height. It is a species rich in flowers, which appear in early spring. The leaves are dark green on the top side and light green on the underside. In our country, it is grown as a decorative apartment plant. It grows easily in sunny conditions, but also partially shaded rooms.

Jasminum rex, a species native to Thailand, is formed as a bush, with large, white, star-like flowers. It grows excellently in front of a window, where it can benefit from sunlight.

Jasminum primiinum, or Japanese jasmine, is a species of jasmine that is distinguished through its yellow flowers with semi-double petals. It has its origins in Vietnam, Southern China, Mexico, Honduras, and the Southern part of the United States. It is a climbing plant that can reach a height of 3 m.

Jasminum officinale, known as common jasmine, is the most common species of jasmine in the temperate climate, due to the large, white flowers with a strong fragrance. It is native to the Caucasus area of Asia, the Middle East, and Central and Southern Europe.

Care. Jasmine prefers bright places with a lot of sun, and if it is kept indoors, it is recommended to place it near a window covered by a thin curtain, to prevent sunburn. It grows optimally at temperatures of 22° C and can be affected by low temperatures. In winter it can be placed in a cooler room.

Substrate. It is recommended that the substrate drain the water very well and have medium fertility. It can be made of gravel, sand, garden soil, in equal parts. It does not thrive in a calcareous substrate.

Watering. It is recommended to administer water once every 2-3 days during the hot summer months or when the surface layer of the substrate is dry. During the winter months, jasmine does not require the same amount of water due to the lack of flowers and low temperatures, so it is advisable to check once or twice a week if the substrate is dry on the surface. The intervals are indicative because the amount of water and the frequency of watering depends on the needs of the plant, temperature, location.

Fertilization. It is done once a month, in spring and summer, with fertilizer for flowering plants. In autumn and winter, the administration of fertilizer should stop to help the plant enter the dormancy period.

Transplanting. It is recommended that every year after the flowers fall, the jasmine be transplanted. Also, after the flowers fall, it is recommended to cut the dry parts and shorten the branches in the desired shape. In general, about a third of their total length should be cut.

Propagation. Jasmine is propagated through cuttings. They are harvested in spring, around April, and the resulting plants will bloom in a year.
