Viburnum, the leaves have dried up
Hello, I have 5 Viburnum mariesii, whose leaves have dried out since September. Unfortunately the irrigation in the yard has stopped working and they have suffered severely from drought.
I don’t know if they are affected by drought or a fungus, but they are affected quite badly.
I would like to prune them more aggressively next week, remove the dead leaves and spray them with a fungicide. Do you think it helps or should I just get rid of them?
Thanks a lot for your help!Attachments:

Hello. In order to be able to help you with recommendations, please tell us how long you have had the plants, describe the existing environmental conditions, mention what type of irrigation system you used during the growing season, how much water you applied and at what intervals, if you applied fertilizers or if you carried out phytosanitary treatments, if there were any changes around the plants (spilled substances, digging, etc.), and any other information that may be relevant in this case. Also, please check all parts of the plant very carefully and let us know if you notice any symptoms (such as pests, holes, sticky substances, leaks, very fine webs, deposits, growths, mold or other). Additionally, please attach more photos of the plants as a whole (including the soil around the plants) and of the symptoms observed, if any (close-up photos).
GOGiulia Oanta1 December 2023Hello. The plants are about 6 years old, they were only sprayed in spring with a fungicide and an insecticide for plant lice. They have been watered sporadically as our irrigation system broke down. I think they were affected by the extreme drought we are suffering from. I don’t have other pictures, but the leaves look severely dry and shredded and when I squeeze them in my fists they sound different. It’s a bit confusing considering that this drying coincides with the end of the vegetative period, to tell you the truth I almost didn’t even notice. I’ll try to come back with detailed pictures of the dried leaves.
The plan would be to prune them thoroughly, remove all the dry leaves, including the ones on the ground, and spray them extensively with a fungicide. Do you think they will recover or should I remove them permanently? I’ll be back with close up pictures.
Thank you.In this case, if you have not identified any other symptoms, it is most likely that the yellowing and drying of the leaves has occurred due to a combination of factors, such as stress from drought and other unfavorable conditions, or the time of year. For the moment you can consider collecting the dry leaves from the crown and ground level, followed by gently loosening the soil at the base of the plants. At the same time, you can consider using a fertilizer with a high potassium content, such as Fertilizer 0-0-40 Azet HerbstKali, 2 kg (by spreading it around all the plants, in a dose of 20 – 30 g/m², followed by its incorporation and watering). It has the effect of increasing the resistance to drought and frost and improving the water balance of trees and shrubs.
If you consider it necessary, at the end of winter you can consider a gentle pruning of the plants, with well sharpened and disinfected tools (e.g. Power Pruner). More information about this work can be found in our article: Trimming and pruning ornamental species.
From spring onwards, it is advisable to monitor the development of the plants, and if you identify unusual symptoms, please come back with clear photos and detailed information. In the following growing season it is recommended to water according to the recorded temperatures and rainfall only when the soil is dry on the surface (by pouring water at the roots). Spraying trees with water, watering them with sprinklers or together with the lawn is contraindicated, as the humidity at the level of the foliage and the constant humidity at the base of the plants represent a favorable environment for the development and propagation of fungal diseases. Also, it is important to ensure the optimal growing conditions for plants: Viburnum, planting guide and care work.-
