Rhododendron + Azalea – The plants stopped growing, and have yellow/dry leaves
Hello,
I have some azaleas and rhododendrons planted outside facing north in a grassy area. They have shade in the morning and a lot of sun in the afternoon. They were planted last fall, buds formed, bloomed in spring, but after the flowers dried, some of them stopped growing (no new leaves grew). The major problem is that the remaining leaves have started to dry out.
Watering is done daily, usually in the evening. The soil is clayey/ loamy, which cracks when dry. Unfortunately we have not applied any fertiliser or carried out any pruning.
Please help me to save them. Thank you in advance for your answers.
PS: From similar articles I have noticed that “constant high humidity (accentuated by the presence of grass around the azalea)” can affect the plant. Would it be ok to add bark to the base of the plant?Attachments:

Azaleas just like rhododendrons need an acidic substrate to assimilate nutrients. Without it, the absorption of micro and macro nutrients is totally or partially blocked. The fact that they have flowered in spring is due to the resources assimilated last year and the result of transplanting in a clay soil, unsuitable for these plants, can be observed in the deterioration of the leaves and discoloration of the plants as a whole. It is difficult to change the pH of the soil but you can try using a special fertiliser such as Rhododendron, 1 kg and partially replacing the substrate around the plants with Acidophilic Plants Professional Substrate, 20 litres. You should also remove dry or decayed leaves and branches as they will not recover.
