Hello! I have a Japanese cherry, planted in the garden for 2 years. This year, after it bloomed, the flowers and branches began to wilt. Please recommend me a treatment. Thank you!

Hello, in order to be able to help you with a recommendation, please tell us more details: when did the symptoms start? What temperatures are in that area, were there oscillations, respectively temperature differences? Is the presence of any pest observed? Is there grass around it? When do you water and how is watering done?

The symptoms appeared a week ago. It’s 20 degrees during the day. I did not notice any pests. Yes, it has a lawn around and is watered by the irrigation system, once a day, respectively in the evening at 9 pm.

First of all, the Japanese cherry is a species sensitive to water stagnation, therefore, given the information provided, most likely the symptoms of the plant are favored by excessive moisture in the soil, which blocks the absorption processes at the roots. Thus, it is recommended to keep a portion without grass / lawn around it, and to increase microbial activity and intensify the absorption processes at the roots, it is recommended to periodically apply, by watering, a fertilizer such as Organic Soil Activator, 350 ml . To stimulate the recovery of the foliage and help it overcome the stress period, it is advisable to apply a foliar fertilizer such as Terra-Sorb Foliar, 100 ml, in a dose of 25 ml / 10 l water. 2-3 treatments can be applied, by foliar spraying, at an interval of 10-14 days. It is also very important to let the soil dry between waterings. More information about care is presented in the following article: Japanese cherry, planting guide and care work.

Hello, I have a similar problem, the browning of Japanese cherries. I have 2 cherries of 4-5 years, they went well in the past years but they started to wilt for about a week. I was afraid that I made some minor prunes about 4 weeks ago and used an arbokol copper mastic for grafting and wounds (I used another mastic last year). I also cut a few days ago and a few shots at the base, at the rootstock (as I do every year) and I used the same mastic. Can it have something to do with these cuts or is the mastic poorly chosen? I watered it once a week, yesterday added an Arbostrat fertilizer (1cap / 1l water). What do you think is the problem and what do you recommend?

Thank you for your answer. There were no big variations in temperature, only a few weeks ago when it was colder. I have attached several pictures, I don’t know how clear they are but I can send more if necessary. I mention that I did not do any treatment of the trees, only fertilizer put yesterday. Thank you.

In order to establish a possible diagnosis, you can section some of the affected branches, mentioning if they show symptoms of browning. You can also attach some photos with the respective sections.

DRDan Rata9 April 2022Good morning, I have attached some pictures, I don’t know how conclusive they are. I noticed that the thin branches are dry, the slightly thicker ones still seem to be green. Please let me know if additional pictures are needed. Thanks.

From the last photos you can see several affected branches, and if the tree is drying out in certain areas, it is most likely a vascular disease. As a rule, this disease develops in the soil when optimal environmental conditions (persistent moisture, heavy soil, poor drainage, most likely caused by excessive watering and gravel covering the soil) lead to the gradual infection of the trees. However, there is no known cure for this condition, but in the future, in order to prevent such situations, it is advisable to plant ornamental trees on lighter soils that allow good drainage, and to water them moderately, allowing the soil to dry slightly before watering agaoin and avoiding the use of gravel or materials that retain moisture and can prevent soil aeration. Furthermore, before planting, you may consider a soil treatment with a fungicide such as AMN Promot, 500 g. This is a biological solution containing beneficial micro-organisms, which inhibits and prevents the growth of pathogens in the soil. It is applied by watering, at a dose of 10 g/10 L water, i.e. 1 litre of solution/sqm.

DRDan Rata10 April 2022Thank you for the detailed answer. I hope to find a saving solution for these cherries, unfortunately, I understand your reasoning. Under the gravel that can be seen in the pictures, I have a foil. I will probably try to apply a foliar fertilizer (a cropmax or terra sorb) in the coming weeks, maybe i’m still lucky… Thanks for the advice.
