Jade tree, insects in the substrate and flies around the plant
Hello! I have a Jade Tree, and today when I watered it, while putting water in the pot, I saw some small, hardly visible to the naked eye, brownish, earth-colored insects come to the surface and then quickly go back into the soil. At the same time, I noticed some small flies flying around the plant, which I had also noticed in the apartment and didn’t understand where they were coming from. I should mention that I water the tree about once a week, it sits on the balcony ledge and I have had it for about a month. Please tell me if these insects in the ground and outside are normal or if I should apply some treatments. What could they be? Thank you!

Hello. In order to help you with a recommendation, please attach some photos (clear, close-up) and/or a video of the insects you have observed.
AnAndreea9 August 2023You can barely see them with the naked eye, it’s hard to see them in pictures unfortunately. And the ones that fly are small and black.
In the absence of photographs of the insects, an exact identification is not possible. From the description, they may be insects that feed on decaying plant matter. They are not harmful to plants.
In the case of black flies, they could be fungus gnats. As their development is favored by high, persistent moisture in the substrate, a first measure is to pay attention to the frequency of watering, allowing the substrate to dry out more before watering again. These flies usually grow in the top layer of the substrate, so it is advisable to replace the first few centimeters of the substrate with a new, fresh one: Cacti & Succulent Plants Substrate, 5 litres.
Afterwards, in order to capture the remaining specimens (and to keep their population under control, so that they no longer represent a nuisance), it is recommended to regularly use traps such as Butterfly Guard, set of 10. Insects are attracted by the color of the trap and stick to the special adhesive.
More information about the care of these plants can be found in our article: Crassula ovata, plant care and growing guide.-
