      Horse chestnut with brown leaves

      I have a chestnut in front of the yard, it’s basically on the street. It looks like this almost every year. Is it a disease? What can I apply?

      There are at least three causes for the appearance of the leaves: 1. An insect, the horse-chestnut leaf miner of ornamental chestnut leaves, Cameraria ohridella. Its larvae feed on the tissue of the leaf, leaving behind those circular spots. 2. A high level of salinity in the soil, responsible for the symptoms on the edges of the leaves. It occurs frequently in trees grown in urban areas. 3. Being an alignment tree, pollution and radiated heat from asphalt, also contribute to premature drying of leaves. Ask local authorities to apply insecticide treatments for street trees. In autumn, it is recommended to gather and destroy the fallen leaves, because harmful insects winter in the leaf layer. In winter, avoid storing snow mixed with substances/salts used for snow removal near the tree trunk.
